Product: EliteBook 8460p
Operating System: Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)

Hello! I am trying to create a BIOS update on my USB drive, but when I select the drive and hit next I get the error: "Required HP UEFI BIOS Update utilities are not available in source or destination folder, unable to continue." I tried to look this up online for guidance but found nothing. I posted the screens in sequence below....

I have a Zbook 15 G3, so things may be different for your computer.

 

As a possible option, I just pick the installation option to copy the BIOS file (*.bin) to a folder on the computer, then create the following path on the USB drive as X:\Hewlett-Packard\BIOS\NEW, where X is the drive letter.  Then I manually copy the BIOS file to that folder.  I also make sure there are no other files or folders on the USB drive.  Then reboot and update the BIOS, it knows to look for that folder.

Thanks NSB! I am looking through C:\SWSetup\sp76540 but there are no .bin files inside of it. Are you referring to something else?

I somewhat recall using that computer at one point in time, the BIOS update methods are likely different.  Are you willing to update the BIOS in Windows, I think it offers the ability to do that option as well for your machine.  I usually do the USB drive method myself, but if you are willing to roll the dice of doing the BIOS in windows, you may have an option to consider.

 

Just curious if you are using a USB hard drive or a USB stick?

USB stick. My problem is that I have Veracrypt encrypting the hard drive which includes a boot password, and that prevents the computer from updating BIOS within Windows which is what I normally would do.

Kind of a long shot:

 

- take a look at the hp log file in the setup folder, something with hp*.log.  It may have the paths it was looking for or other debug information showing where it got lost.

 

- Do you have another USB stick you can try or try reformatting the USB stick?

Some observations, but it appears you may need to get a HP support case going to resolve the issue and decode the return error codes.  Perhaps they have an existing Advisory note out there somewhere.

1) The HPQ Flash Wizard error prompt you provided did not say whether the error was in the source or destination.  It appears from the log, that the issue is in the source program (not the USB stick):
"The binary to create HP_TOOLS partition is not present: 'c:\SWSetup\SP76540\hpqflash\Installer.exe'"

2) I think the real binary file is buried in the CAB files, but that is an HP thing.

3) I see there was an attempt to create the tools on drive E, but was cancelled by the user, "E:\HEWLETT-PACKARD\BiosUpdate". I do not see an attempt to create tools or folders on drive F, which is your USB stick.  This shows further evidence there was no attempt to write to the USB stick.  Perhaps  you had the USB stick as drive E at one point, which would show that the program was able to see the USB stick and create folders etc.

4) A few other errors suggest other tool issues as well.  Your system is ID 0x161C but it cannot find it properly in the map.ini file:
"GetTargetExecutable|Cannot find this ID [161C] in MAP.INI file".

5) Other parts say it found the ID:
"Found c:\SWSetup\SP76540\hpqflash\MAP.INI file"
"Found [SYSTEM_ID] section in INI file", which is another MAP.INI file
