I have been told that in some- not all- cases the issue can be resolved by removing the hard drive and starting up without it. Of course it can't go far without the hdd, but maybe just enough to clear the Pending image message. Start up without it, then shut down, reinstall the hdd and try to boot.

 

If you don't know how to remove the hard drive- find your Maintenance & Service Guide under User Manuals on Support page for your model. To find Support page use the button at top of this page titled "Support". Click "Support & Troubleshooting" from the menu. Put in you 'full' Model number or Product number.
