The content in this tread is for Consumer Notebooks that HP has tested with Windows 8 upgrade. Information may be useful for others, but drivers, applications and/or bios references are related to systems HP has tested and are providing updates for and may not work on other systems.
To determine if your specific system is one of those that HP has tested With Windows 8 and to download the instructions guiding you through an upgrade please go here and enter your Product Number
There are two types of BIOS updates.
Windows 8 BIOS updates for the most recently shipping Windows 7 systems will support UEFI 2.3.1. Such systems would be capable of supporting Windows 8 features like Secure Boot and GPT drives (these features require a clean install of Windows 8).
Windows 8 BIOS updates for older systems are limited by the BIOS chip size. Such systems will not be capable of supporting Windows 8 features like Secure Boot and GPT drives. It is still recommended to update as they introduce support for the wireless button in Windows 8 and may have other fixes related to issues seen in test.
Windows 8 BIOS updates for products supporting UEFI 2.3.1
The list below covers initial Windows 8 bios releases. More recent BIOS versions may be available on the software download web page for your product.

This completes the BIOS update overview for Windows 8

Well...I'm guessing they are not supported:( which is weird because as Mr. ArtAppreciator wrote "older systems are limited by the BIOS chip size" but if you look at some new bios files for models that are supported you'll see that their sizes are even smaller than those for DV6-6000 series. For instance the latest bios (f.12) for pavillion m6-1040er (which is supported) is 4.98MB and for dv6-6b57er (F.1A) is 7.73Mb the latter chip has more room sorta))) nevertheless it can't be upgraded to support UEFI 2.3.1 specification.:( I know it's not right to make a comparison like that and I'm probably wrong but still looks kinda weird to me.

I have a dv6-6166tx BTW, which I bought last year in October. And now they are telling me to dump this 1000$ machine because there will be no support for it anymore.
HP! Don't give us this @#$@ secure boot and other BIOS updates, just Win 8 supported Switchable Graphics drivers and Beats Audio will do just fine.

I am still having the same problem with my Hp Pavilion dv4 3029tx no bios updates or any news at all have been released relating to this model and hp has not tested this model according to the link above.
Laptop is only 11 months old and it has been phased out and i have ran out of support for this model.
All i want is a bios update to fix the black screen i recive after the logo of windows 8 and to be able to boot into it successfully and also a video card update would be nice aswell.
Honestly if HP have this much toruble supporting recent machines its a sad look into the quality of there support.

When i checked with my product number whether my Compaq Pressario CQ60-101AU notebook is tested, it says, "HP has not tested this PC" Is this model qualified for Windows 8? But i've already bought and activated Windows 8 Pro. But everything works fine after installing Windows 8 and got some updates for driver softwares from Windows Update and everything just works fine and faster. Will HP release drivers for this model? Many who used this notebook have upgraded to Windows 8 Pro. But we didn't get the drivers from HP. If HP doesn't release drivers, where to download exact drivers for this model?
This isn't fair that Microsoft giving Upgrades even for XP/Vista Users, but the PC manufacturers(including HP) don't even release drivers for the products which are 2-4 years older. In some situations, eventhough the PC/notebook/motherboard is said compatibile by Microsoft are not given drivers by PC Manufacturers. Then what is the use of Microsoft giving the upgrades to XP and Vista knowing that they are very old OS and mostly used on very old PC/notebook Models.
HP must look on to that and release Windows 8 drivers for atleast those Win7/Vista Compatible PC/notebook models. HP must not be selfish like other PC Brands, because we love HP than other Brands for Quality and Support.
** Please give Kudos If you want to Thank Me! **
