Many thanks for that, I will attend to that this evening.

It does seem that perhaps I'm adding support for "secure boot" so I can disable it. Still flummoxed as to why it won't boot from USB.

Thanks for the reply, but I don't think Windows drivers will help me boot Linux from USB (or anything), unless I'm missing something.

Have you tried all available usb ports? Sometimes a pair of ports will cease functioning if the owner inadvertently used a usb device that exceeded the allowable current limit for the port. That  happens when an owner uses  an unpower port replicator to increase the number of ports.

You can see what the limit is in the Device Manager.

I tried the EFI update. It installed some files to my USB drive, but I'm not sure what I'm supposed to do with them. I can't boot to the USB, obviously, and I wasn't prepared to let this tool mess around with my existing partitions.

The thing is, the laptop *thinks* it can boot to USB, it just doesn't.

When I boot Linux off USB, I get a message about loading the Grub boot loader, then I get a blinking cursor. When I boot a Windows installation medium, it just fails to boot.

OK, I give up. I have tried various versions of Linux, Windows installation media, supergrub, PLOP - this laptop will boot none of them via USB. It is broken by design.

All I need to know now is this - is it faulty? Will a BIOS update fix it? Or am I looking at a replacement laptop?

Same exact problem with a HP DV4-2165dx laptop.

Been trying to boot from either of the USB ports. Many wasted hours.  I tried Linux, Windows 7, external USB hard drive, USB flash drive, different boot orders, different BIOS settings, different USB ports, different booting methods.  It will not boot any of them. The name of the drive will show up in the list when I press F9 at boot, but it will not boot anything. Very frustrating.  I tried this with the original BIOS and then upgraded to the latest BIOS.  It will boot from the DVD or CD.

Has anyone ever gotten an HP DVX to boot from the USB port?

Pointing as requested.

Here is a direct link to the UEFI update on the web support portal for your notebook.

That's not a good link.

I am having the same problem. Can't boot from USB memory stick. When I select F9, the USB drive isn't an option. Only has DVD and hard drive.

I installed  linux on usb flash drive or USBHDD. (not LiveUSB) using my DV7.

HP pavillion dv7 does not boot it . BUT, try not-booting usbHD or flash drive on other any 32 bit or 64 bit notebook

or desktop boots ok.. I try it using a SAMSUNG N150 netpc it boots.

DV7 chipset or firmware must be crıppled or...
