I have somehow locked my touchpad-mouse. How do I re-activate it.

Hey applepye,

Take a look at the touchpad. In the top left corner you'll see either a light (probably orange) or a rectangle.

Double-tap that light or rectangle to toggle your touchpad on and off.

The light will be ON if the touchpad is disabled. That is because most people would prefer it to be off the majority of the time, especially if one is trying to use the computer in a dark room. You don't want that light glaring at you all the time when the touchpad is On/Enabled. In addition, the light comes on to call your attention to the fact that the touchpad is off (since it is on the majority of the time).

Hope that helps! If double-tapping a few times doesn't work, there a few other things to try.

First, a Hard Reset:

1. Shutdown

2. Unplug the charger and remove the battery and all peripherals

3. Press and hold the Power button for 10 seconds to drain any residual electricity from the unit. This will give the computer a fresh boot state.

4. Reinsert the battery and the charger

5. Power on and test the touchpad

If you're still having the same issue, let me know and I'll get some additional details on your computer. Let me know the results when you get a chance 🙂

King-Arthur,

Welcome to the HP Forum!

What is needed to enable the TouchPad depends on what caused the TouchPad to be disabled.

The underlying causes of TouchPad not working include, but may not be limited to:

  • Entanglement: Perform the Hard Reset .  Boot the computer and log in

  • The TouchPad is off - very firm double tap in the upper left corner to turn it back on (depends on model)

Most of the standard, and even some not so standard, answers are within this Thread.  You need only read what has been suggested already to see if the suggestions apply to your situation.

If you dislike this idea, you can start a new Thread of your own and ask the question.  Someone may repost the answers for you.

I hope this helps you find and resolve the issue on your notebook.

Any suggestions to get a my touchpad to work. I have a HP Probook 4520S and the device is showing up in device manager, but is not listed under the mouse properties to enable. The double tap of the touchpad is not responding also.
