I have two users on my HP Envy Windows 8.1 and for one user in Control Zone settings there is that box to check to disable the touchpad, but it's missing on the other user. Both are administrators. Why is it missing for one of the users? In order to disable the touchpad, and I have to totally disable the Control Zone.

I found the only way to disable the touch pad on an hp envy running windows 10. I have sat through 3 45 minute sessions with tech support to try to deal with something which should be as simple as pushing a button. In thier wisdom, they have removed any button and there is nothing in the software that disables it, so I finally taped a piece of cardboard over the touchpad. It has to be cardboard because even thick paper doesn't work. Unbelievable to me that something which should be so obvious that people will want is not possible. I cannot type anything without touching the giant mousepad. Won't be buying another HP product because if they can't fix this, they don't know what they are doing in general.

It's quite some time back (nearly a year) that I encountered this problem, with a newly-bought laptop, running Windows 7. In the end, I downloaded an updated driver (Synaptics, I think) for the touchpad, and was able to switch off the touch function there. As I said, I can't remember where I found the solution, but I havent had a problem since I did.

I am running Win10 now and have lost the ability to switch off the Touchpad. With Win 8.1, the Synaptics Touchpad icon would show up in the lower rt corner and I could click it and it would go away and the touchpad would be disabled.
Now, I don't see the icon anywhere, I found the software in the Control Panel list of programs that have been installed but I can't find the app file.
I went to the Mouse settings and got a message saying 'Unable to connect to the Synaptics Pointing Device Driver'. Then it suggested I click on the Yes button to uninstall the Synaptics driver, and finally would need to reinstall my pointing device driver (for my wireless mouse, in a USB port). I hesitate to do that because the USB input for the mouse was there during the install of Win10 and only was 'installed' by plugging it in (under Win8). And I don't like to think abou having to install the Synaptics driver later on, since I don't know where it is.
Any help with this would be much appreciated. The dancing cursor is making me crazy.

The answer above is close to perfect if you are using a windows7 OS. Only hiccup comes after you:
- Place a check in "Disable internal pointing device when external USB pointing device is attached"
you will not be able to make the change by clicking OK. You must instead click on the Apply button in lower right hand corner of the Dialog Box. Next time you go back and visit this dialog box ( without making any changes) the apply button will be "greyed out" and you will then have to click on OK to exit or the upper righthand Red X we are all familiar with.

Not even taping a piece cardboard would help me, as the touchpad is going crazy frequently w/o any reason it seems.
I have found scores of others with the same problem, some still complaining, others gave up.
As all solutions proposed here do not apply nor work I tried deleting the touchpad it in the device manager - all doesn't help. I paid $999 for this upscale envy laptop and this is what I got?
Shame on you HP !

I was able to disable the mouse in additional setting and don't use when usb mouse is present and have been doing that for since I purchased the computer but everytime l reboot I have to do the same thing or the touchpad is active. I decided to uninstall the synopis driver in device manager and now I can't turn it off anymore. I didn't disappear and the ability to turn it off disappered. I guess I will have to get a hard piece of cardboard or something to be able to type on the laptop. If I want to type a document now I have to go to the desktop computer. It is a real shame that something as necessary as turning off a touchpad has been made impossible.
