Hi there -

I recently bought a new HP envy 17 laptop, and have added a USB mouse. The touchpad remains active, however, meaning that it is almost impossible to type without brushing it and sending the cursor haywire. I have had HP laptops before, and it was always easy to disable the touchpad, but there's no clear way to switch this one off. I've had to restart this message several times due to this very problem.

Hoping you can help.

It's quite some time back (nearly a year) that I encountered this problem, with a newly-bought laptop, running Windows 7. In the end, I downloaded an updated driver (Synaptics, I think) for the touchpad, and was able to switch off the touch function there. As I said, I can't remember where I found the solution, but I havent had a problem since I did.

Hi

The touchpads on some new notebooks do not have an on/off button go to control panel The touchpad itself does not have a dot or hardware switch toturn on/off. However, you can turn this function on and off from the control panel.

Click start

- Click control panel

- Click Hardware and Sound

- Under "Devices and Printers" click on "Mouse"

- Click the "ClickPad Settings" tab

- Place a check in "Disable internal pointing device when external USB pointing device is attached"

- OK

Let us know how it goes!

Dear Manjunath -

I'm running Windows 7 (64-bit). When I click on 'Control Panel', I can get to 'Devicesse and Printers', and then 'Mouse', but there's no 'ClickPad Settings' tab, so I'm stuck from there.

Hi

Disabling the TouchPad or ClickPad

On some notebooks, the TouchPad can be turned off by pressing an on/off button located near the TouchPad. If the notebook does not have an on/off button, you can still disable the TouchPad using the Mouse Properties screen.
NOTE:You need to use an external mouse or some other pointing device to control the pointer when the TouchPad is disabled.
To disable the TouchPad:
  1. From the Start screen, type personalize to open the Search charm, and select Personalize your computer from the search results.

  2. In the Personalization window, click the Change mouse pointers link to open Mouse Properties.

  3. Click the Device Settings tab of the Mouse Properties screen, and then click the Disablebutton to turn off the TouchPad.

The TouchPad can be re-enabled when needed.

Dear Manjunath,

I'm afraid that the 'Device Settings' tab doesn't appear when I click 'Change Mouse Pointers'.
Here's what I see

So - unfortunately, I can't use point 3 of your suggestion.

On My HP Envy, I did the following:

 Click start

- Click control panel

- Click Hardware and Sound

- Under "Devices and Printers" click on "Mouse"

- Click on HP Control Zone Settings

- Place a check in "Disable internal pointing device when external USB pointing device is attached"

- OK

Let us know how it goes!

The difference in the suport tech's instructions are the HP Control Zone Settings is where you will find

the box to disable the internal  pointingt device.

I just got the Envy for Christmas and spent over three hours trying to figure out how to disable the touchpad. HP Should have designed a turn-off button just like their previous laptops. I am an HP retiree from the Global Notebook PC Division and this is an extremely frustrating design 'feature' to say the least!!!

This worked for me and I have a wireless external USB pointing device.
