Good morning to everybody!

Few months ago I acquired an EliteBook 8570w (A7C38AV) and although I'd say It goes pretty well, I detected some little issues I haven't been able to solve.

The laptop's a i7-3820QM CPU which has an Intel HD 4000 integrated on it, (somebody tell me if I'm wrong). The matter is that I've noticed the fan is always on and hardly running. After that, a battery duration test showed that even when using a SSD the performance is far from being good.

First of all, I tried to disable the discrete GPU, (K2000), but It was impossible. I couldn't do it by OS and I tried doing it by BIOS, but once there I realized there is nothing to configure! Many of the bios advanced features are hidden. No video configuration, thermal configuration, ACPI control nor nothing.

Furthermore, taking a look to my system I found that the integrated GPU is not detected either.

I can't understand, it seems to be done to avoid "children" touching delicate stuff.

May anyone tell me how to visualize the hidden options in bios, (Ver F.43. It's the last one), and how to disable discrete GPU and enable integrated GPU please?

   Thanks in advanced.

Gaby.

Hi !
I have exactly the same issue on my Elitebook 8570p with i7-3520m CPU on Debian Jessie 3.11-2-amd64.
Did you find a solution ?

I have the same problem !

I have tried everything I have found on the web  to get my system detect the HD4000 which is said to be somewhere inside. I am finally wondering  if INTEL has made a special series of i7-3840QM for HP without the HD4000 chipset 😉 .

The BIOS graphical  interface is a shame  compared to other brands in the same category. Very few things can be configured while you read on the web that the solution to your problem is "simple : go to the Bios and select.....".

ACPI is yielding numerous error messages during boot  which seems to  mean that tables are buggy.

In the present situation my NVIDIA board is always active, fan remains  at high speed, there is no access to screen brightness even if the keys are are working, this laptop is consuming a lot and transforms you into a power source hunter.

Any help from HP or the community will be highly appreciated, I can provide error messages I have collected  and list of useless actions I have taken with no result to anybody who may know how to progress on this question.

Not yet, and don't waste your time with HP support, they're not going to tell you anything.

Nobody knows anything and who knows doesn't seem to want to tell it to us.

I can't believe I spent almost 2000 pounds in a high-gamma laptop from a company I thought to be reliable in case of needing support, and they don't even answer a post! It's not going to happen again.

PS: Someone from HP support, more suitable to work in a restaurant than in a call center, called me to try to convince me that there is no other option in the BIOS than I can see.

Thank you Dennis for your words.

Before posting here I have filled a request for support to HP  my file number is :  4646981690. As you may verify it has been closed by HP in a mood very close to what Gaby33 is describing.

For the moment no hope on that side.

HP wanted to change the main board and the graphics board that are working well as far as it can be checked. I am not a specialist, I am using my computer to encode mp4 with ffmpeg hat provides a good use of GPU and that's why I have bought a "strong GPU". The rest of the time I am an almost ordinary user that is very satisfied with the intel video chipset that provides largely enough graphics acceleration and consumes much less energy ! Meaning that I can work in the train during all the travel time and not for only a bit more than the first hour.

On my old computer whose brand starts with DE and finishes by LL, there was in the BIOS a check box to decide if yes or no you wanted to use optimus techology to manage the cohabitation of both INTEL and NVIDIA graphics chipsets. Once you checked the box, it is your business to be able to manage optimus technology whatever OS you want to use....

As Gaby33 says, and  it is also my feeling , there is no hope; the BIOS is of very poor quality and "nothing more can be expected"...Just open your BIOS side by side  to a friend that has another brand... you will understand at a glance why we  are in trouble !

It should be nice if other users of HP laptops  that contain but do not enable Optimus technology should contribute to increase pressure on HP.

I have tried some other tricks from the hackintosh community with no result....

Anybody with suggestions or a good BIOS  is welcome

I have found an answer here :

http://www.notebookcheck.net/Review-HP-EliteBook-8570w-Notebook.83982.0.html

"The integrated Intel HD Graphics 4000 of the processor is not used, since Nvidia Optimus is not implemented."

further down :

"The HP EliteBook 8570w is capable of performing most tasks very well - despite the somewhat low-end configuration. The only major point of criticism: HP didn't implement Nvidia's Optimus technology (our review of the Fujitsu Celsius H720 left us with a very favorable impression of this technology). As a result, HP's workstation loses some points due to higher noise levels, higher power consumption, and a reduction of the possible battery life. In addition, Quick Sync (Intel's hardware video encoding and decoding technology), which is built into the CPU, is also not available - some users who need to work with videos a lot might not be too happy about this omission."

At last I got a call from a  kind and efficient engineer from HP who had really understood the problem from my last case  !

Thanks to HP and thanks to this anonymous french speaking engineer..

The answer is : "it is not possible until a  Bios revision" (hopefully next one !). HP relies on Nvidia drivers under other Os than linux and unfortunately linux Nvidia drivers do not include optimus management (which brings back to memories Linus Torwalds recent words on that company...  😉 )

I have been told that our  question has been forwarded internally, let us hope that BIOS engineers will process it as soon as possible..
