Hi,
I downloaded Ubuntu and Rufus. Put it on the USB stick. Put it in the USB port on my laptop and....nothing. The computer sees the USB flash drive and reads the contents but will not boot. It keeps going back to the original message.

When I downloaded Rufus it refers to finding the ISO file but it is not on my computer. I don't want to seem ignorant but I don't want to have problems with my desktop by downloading a program that will alter it.
Hello,
Ubuntu is another operating system. Ubuntu is not related to Microsoft's Windows 10. You want to install Windows 10 and not Ubuntu, therefore you need the Windows 10 ISO image. This image can be "written in a bootable way" with the usage of many applications including Microsoft's Media Creation Tool, Rufus, etc... I just gave you links to Ubuntu's website because they have very good and clear instructions How to generally use Rufus to write an ISO image on it
or How to generally use burn a ISO image on a DVD.
Please, do not download Ubuntu (Ubuntu ISO image) and just use the instructions as an example/as a reference how to do it with the Windows 10 ISO image.
With regards to your last comment - Ubuntu itself will not alter your PC - the Windows you already have is already altered. That is why it gets this error 0x34 and cannot boot - it's Boot Configuration Data (BCD) is not ok. There are 2 ways to fix it :
- attempt to fix the BCD by following the initial commands/instructions
or
- reinstall the entire operating system (Windows 10)

Hey !
Here are another instructions (video ones) how to create a bootable media (Windows 10 installation media) using Microsoft's Media Creation Tool > https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sSmANi2hTTc
How to download it video instructions > http://bfy.tw/9vuJ
When ready, you may proceed with the initially posted instructions (first/previous page / step 4) 🙂
Let me know if you face difficulties.

Hi,
Nothing works. The computer will not access the USB. It reads it. It shows what's on it. It will not access it. Before submitting my original post, I had tried the Win 10 Media Creation Tool. I downloaded the Win 10 Media Creation Tool a second time after we started communicating. The computer will not boot on the USB.
I'm at a loss.
All I can do now is take to a computer repair shop. I hate doing that.
Thank you for all you time. I really appreciate it.
