I bought my HP Notebook G6 laptop 2months ago, suddenly it would not boot to windows and had a blank screen. I called the support centre which told me it could be the RAM, I then took my laptop to their total care centre which tested the RAM which wasn't the issue & said it could be 1 of 3 problems, the motherboard, processor or hard drive so they were pretty sure I had to remove all my data before they could fix it. They advised me to go PC world where it would cost £90 and take up to 10 days, so I hired a freelance IT tech guy which cost £40 and was done under half an hour. I took it back to the Total Care centre which they then took in to repair. When I went to pick up the problem was apparently a cable which connected the screen caused the problem therefore my data had not been touched. (Waste of my time & money) I then took it home to see that my f12 button stayed orange and would just turn and off airplane mode with no option to switch wifi back on. I tried all suggestions I had found on this and other forums. I called their support line which were surprised by this (although I have seen NUMEROUS posts about this on this and other sites) they made me reset my laptop so it'll be like the day I first bought it, all data gone. Again still not fixed. After 2 hours and 3 phone calls back there was no solution. So now I have booked it to be picked up by courier service to repair, all in all I've had this stupid laptop for 2 months and 1 month to repair. (it took 2 weeks for the screen to work, and now it'll be picked up next Thursday and take up to 10 days to repair). It's shockingly ridiculous!! I have no idea how many more issues it will run into in the next year. Anyone else had similar problems?

Hello Romjo.

You indicate you solved your issue with the wifi but just in case others see this post I'd like to post the steps.  The wireless button works a little differently in Windows 8 than in previous versions of Windows.  To resolve the issue try the following.

  1. From the Metro view type "wireless."
  2. You should then see "settings" on the right.  Select this and it will populate many wireless related items on the left side of the screen.
  3. Select "wireless" from this section.
  4. You should see a few options.  One being "Airplane mode" and the others being an on/off switch for bluetooth and/or wireless.
  5. Ensure that both of these are turned on while airplane mode is off.
  6. Save changes and reboot.

On the note of your other issue have you tried powering off your router for 30 seconds and then trying again once it is powered up?

Have a lovely day!  🙂

In this scenario, if you turn off Airplane mode before the wireless devices are initialized, the devices stay off even though Airplane mode is off.

solution:

  • Swipe in from the right edge of the screen, or press the Windows logo key+C.
  • Tap or click Settings.
  • Tap or click Change PC Settings.
  • Tap or click Wireless.
  • Tap or click an affected device to turn it on again.
