I have a broken screen on my laptop that I cannot afford to replace and I need to perform a factory restore badly.  I operate my computer through an external display but without being able to see any boot screens I cannot enter the appropriate commands to conduct a factory restore.  I can do a system restore just fine but I don't have any restore points that are old enough to be viable.  How may I perform the factory restore with an external display?

If you can load the deskttop, then you should do the factory image recovery inside the Windows operating system. Until you replace the LCD display your options are quite limited. You can try tapping the F4 key.

In the search all programs and files box type in recovery and press the enter key. That should invoke the recovery manager.

Connect an external display to your notebook via the VGA (blue 15-pin) connector and power on your notebook.  You should be see the BIOS post messages as it starts up. When you have booted into Windows 7 click on the Windows start Orb and type in HP Recovery and then press the enter key. You should now be in the Recovery Manager. Select System Recovery.

I understand how to perform a system recovery, I am just unable to see anything via my external monitor. I have an external monitor set up but I am unable to see the BIOS menus.  The monitor only starts display once the desktop is loaded.  How can I make it so that I am able to see the recovery menus so that I may perform the recovery?
