General Windows 7 Upgrade Guide for HP Laptops

Hi. I have an HP Pavilion HDX9494nr Entertainment Notebook and I have been leery about upgrading (or doing the complete install or whatever) to Windows 7 for some time now, due to fears of incompatibility of hardware. The lack of support being offered from HP for this particular model has not helped at all either. I agree with the person who posted earlier about being dissappointed with HP for not offering Windows 7 drivers and support for these laptops with specs that go way beyond the operating system's requirements. I'm hearing more and more everyday about the awesomeness of Windows 7, and once again, the temptation to 'just go for it' is getting stronger. I would REALLY REALLY REEEEALLY appreciate any and all opinions, experience, and/or advice on the matter, from fellow owners of the HP Pavilion HDX9494nr Entertainment Notebook. It would be such a shame to buy 7 only to find out i've wasted my money. But really any information on the matter from anyone who thinks they could help would be sooo appreciated. I have read through the entire forum by the way, but with no mention of my model, I wanted to get a direct opinion from the people in here that seem knowledgable on the matter. Is it worth it? Basically, I'm looking for any information I can get here, as I haven't been able to find out too much of anything at all through all my searching. Thanks in advance for any help.

You really shouldn't have any problems upgrading to 7. With either the drivers posted in Part 2 of this guide and/or your Vista drivers you should be well covered.(Vista drivers also work in 7)

I found out about the Free Upgrade from Vista to Windows 7 too late.  My purchase date was in the correct time frame, but I missed the March 1, 2010 deadline.  Any suggestions on how to upgrade without having to purchase the new version?

Sorry, but I know of no way to upgrade to 7 for free if you missed the promo.

Hey there Cheryl,

I have an HP G70-246US Notebook that I upgraded with the promo (Level 1) from Vista to Win7 and everything has been fine.  However, now I found out I need to change to 64 bit Win7 for some programs I need to run for work.  So, I found out I had to do a full "custom" install.  So, I backed everything up and tried to do that.  Formatted the HD and the whole deal and reinstalled Win7 from my HP Win7 disc and never really saw any option to choose 32 bit or 64 bit.  Figured maybe it comes later.  Nope.

So, I thought maybe I missed it.  So, I did it all over again, even deleted and recreated the partition, just to be on the very safe side.  Didn't see any type of option to change it.  I even checked the Microsoft website and they say it can be changed from 32 bit to 64 bit and my computer says it's "64 bit capable", so everything should be good to go, but I don't see any type of option for 64 bit on the "custom" install screen.  😞

So, after the second 32 bit install, I pull the Win7 CD out and I happen to notice on the CD it says 32 bit software only.  😮  Why is that?  Is there any way I can also get the 64 bit software?  Why wasn't it included like a normal Win7 upgrade disc?  Am I stuck having to actually go out and buy a Win7 upgrade disc now because I'm stuck having to move to 64 bit for work?

If there is anyway to help or have me write to anyone, please let me know.

Your model will use most drivers from Part 2 of the Guide on first page, Intel Chipset, Nvidia graphics, Alps Touchpad,etc.. Exception will be the Audio and Ethernet driver, which you can use your Vista drivers for HERE

thx for your help, i have successfully installed windows7. exept a little problem, almost all the drivers are installed exept for

Validity, HP Remot Control HID Device and HP Mobile Data Protection Sensor. Do you know where can i get those?
