Thank you very much.  It doesn't ask for the password, but it does just go to a black screen now.  I've tried restarting as well as removing the batter and power cycling it, but still a black screen.  I've also tried holding in certain keys (shift, del, f10, f12) as it boots and nothing changes.  I briefly get a blinking cursor in the upper left of the screen, before it goes to the black screen.  Any idea what is going on.  Thanks again.

Go into the BIOS and run the HDD test.

I can't go into the bios.  Literally all that happens when I turn the computer on is a brief blinking cursor in the upper right, then the black screen.  Unless there is some key combo I'm unaware of when I turn on the computer to bypass everything else.

Scratch that.  I managed to get into the bios by holding F8, F10, F12, and Del as I turned on the computer.

I'm in the bios, but I don't see a HDD Test Mode anywhere

Try tapping ESC when you power-on.
