Hi CMichaelC,

I feel I have to respond to your comment " If your hinge itself is broken, that is more than likely abuse"....  that is absolutely not the case! The hinge can (and will) fail because it is poorly designed and there is too much pressure on a very weak section of it. The hinge itself is also far too tight to start with... I bought a new one and loosened the tension on it before fitting.

Take a look at my blog post here - https://hpfaultyhinge.wordpress.com/

All the best

I also have a HP Pavilion dv7t-7000 that the case cracked at the left hinge.  It's out of warranty. I replaced the case September 2015 and everything was great. Now the new case is splitting on the left side. Does anyone know what can be done to reinforce the plastic where the hinges bolt in? I love my laptop as it's my 3rd HP but I'm not ready to buy another yet!

Mine is the same issue with screws coming out. Both have now come out and small black plastic is now breaking off. Please let me know how to fix this. After reading all of these comments with the same issue, I feel this is an HP manufacturing defect at this time. I would greatly appreciate your help. Thank you.

Hello,

I also am having the same problem. The left side, closest to the screen has been popping out whenever I flip the screen to open or close it. I've had the HP Envy 17-j092nr for 3 years now but a few months ago the side became loose. I just held it shut or used the laptop on a table. But recently, it's been opening even more. I've been pressing it shut but now my fan needs to be replaced. When I spoke to a repair tech, I was told the hinges were broken and I needed to replace it along with the lid (is the lid connected to the hinges or can I just buy the hinges?). I was told the broken hinge is what damaged the fan.

What can I do? What pieces do I need to buy or can HP fix this? Please help me!

I have the same issue with the hinge breaking. My HP Envy 17 is out of warranty.

I have just replaced the fan as that failed. Seems the two issues are interrelated somehow.

Seems this is a design flaw and one which HP should fix for free.

I'm interested to hear what HP will do for you. I have the same exact problem. My computer is the same age as yours but my problem started shortly after I bought it. Little did I know it was going to be such a big problem. Thanks
