My HP Envy x2, upon start-up, informs me that my secondary battery may need to be replaced. My battery is well-charged and shows no sign of unusual drainage (beyond the usual daily drain when shut-off and not sleeping). My computer was purchased just 5 months ago. I really do not want to have to replace a battery on a new device. Is there some way I can check whether or not the message is true?

Hi,
When did you get the error message and what steps did u perform to get the error message.
Can you please try testing the batteries of the Envy X2 again by following the steps mentioned in the link below
http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c03325217
If it still fails please call tech support and get it replaced if the unit is under warranty.
Also you need to identify which one of the 2 batteries are not working as there are 2 batteries in Envy X2.
Let me know on the updates.

The primary battery is the one for the tablet and the secondary battery is the one for the base of the notebook.

You dont need to detach anything. When you run the test, the test results will mention about the primary and secondary battery test results. Depending on that, you can get that specific one replaced.

Yes. The warranty covers both hardware and software.
Please do call HP, let them know about the tests that you have performed. Also please make a note of the error codes/ messages that you get if the test results fail and inform them when you call them (1-800-474-6836).
They will have it replaced for you for free (if under warranty) and in the future if you have any issues/concerns then we will have the details.
Do let me know if you have any more concerns.

I ran the battery test as suggested and I passed but it only appears to be scanning the primary battery. I ran it twice and have not seen any information about the secondary battery. Is there a way to instruct the tool to run the test on the secondary battery?
