I have an HP HDX-18T that I am looking to upgrade the RAM on (currently 2GBx2 DDR3 PC3-8500 • CL=7 • Unbuffered • NON-ECC • DDR3-1066 • 1.5V • 256Meg x 64).  Motherboard is Quanta 3610.  Chipset is PM45.  Running Windows 7 x64.  Processor is Intel Core2Duo T9900 3.06 GHz. HP product number is NK148AV.

I am hoping to upgrade to 16gb (8GBx2), but with the PM45 chipset, I am reading that 8gb is the max.  However, I can't seem to find if they are referring to 8gb max PER DIMM, or 8gb max TOTAL (4x2).?!  If 8 total, can this be changed in the BIOS, or am I literally stuck at 8?  When it comes to speeds, can I/should I go w/ the fastest possible specs, to overclock in the BIOS, or am I just wasting money after a certain point ?  Recommendations on what is believed to be the ideal setup in my scenario would be much appreciated.  Thanks !

Hi:

It should be plug and play.

Worst case scenario will be that you have to hit the F1 key to save the new memory configuration in the BIOS.

Hi,

This is a very reliable vendor. You can buy from them or use the information (including price) to buy else where:

Unfortunately Crucial is wrong.  I had checked that website previously, but it lists my computer as having DDR2 PC2-6400, DDR2 (non-ECC).  This is not correct, I have DDR3.

Hi,

Well, you may also want to check this:

Good luck.

Those only list DDR2 as well, but my HP has DDR3.  Even though the MoBo (Quanta 3610) only lists DDR2, DDR3 became an option late in the game:

DDR2 PC2-5300 • CL=5 • Unbuffered • NON-ECC • DDR2-667 • 1.8V • 64Meg x 64 • This for HDX 18

DDR3 PC3-8500 • CL=7 • Unbuffered • NON-ECC • DDR3-1066 • 1.5V • 256Meg x 64 • This for HDX 18T

HP didn't notify others of this properly.  I am 100% sure I am running the DDR3-8500-1066.  The questions remain !!  HELP !  Thank you.

Hi:

The maximum memory is 2 x 4 GB.

The chipset only supports a max of 8 GB of memory.

I have an HP Elitebook 6930p with the same chipset (but with PC2-6400 memory), and it only supports a max of 8 GB of memory.

The 8 GB total is confirmed for your notebook, by looking in chapter 1, page 1-1 of the service manual, which I have provided at the link below.

http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c01705400.pdf

Nothing can be done to increase the max of 2 x 4 GB.

You can install PC3-1333, but it will only run at 1066 Mhz.

No HP notebook that I know of can be overclocked--processor or memory.

Decided to go with this:

Kingston HyperX 8GB (2 x 4GB) 204-Pin DDR3 SO-DIMM DDR3 1600 HyperX Plug n Play Laptop Memory Model KHX1600C9S3P1K2/8G

after reading lots of good reviews.  I am aware it'll only run at 1066 instead of the 1600  😞  but its cheap anyways.  do I need to boot into BIOS (F.32 Insyde) upon installing the RAM, then do a 'memory scan?' (the only memory related option I see in the BIOS), or is it quite literally 'plug and play?'

Thanks !

rjlonergan - I have the exact same model and RAM on board and am looking to upgrade to 8 GB.

Did the Kingston RAMs you purchased work out for you?

I will do the same.

Appreciate your response.
