Hi,

I've just bought an HP Pavilion laptop, using Windows 8.1 and in the main, I'm very pleased with it. However, the wi-fi speed seems to be limited to 50 mbs. I've tried an ethernet connection plugged directly from the HP into my Virgin Media Superhub 2 upstairs and get very near to the 120 mbs that is advertised. My old computer still shows a variety of speeds on wifi downstairs, but will often get to nearly 100mbs.

The Pavilion will reach the same 48/50 mbs every time and tbh that's probably fine for most of my tasks, but it's frustrating when I'm paying for up to 120 mbs speeds.

Any thoughts, please?

Hi alanp4,

Welcome to the HP Community, I hope you enjoy your experience! To help you get the most out of the HP Forums I would like to direct your attention to the HP Forums Guide First Time Here? Learn How to Post and More.

I see that you are having some problems getting your max internet speed. I will be happy to help you with that. There are a number of different factors that can limit the speed. How far from the router are you when you go wireless? Any large metal objects between you and the router will also slow down the speed. This HP document Troubleshooting Wireless Network and Internet (Windows 😎 will show you how to use the built-in Windows troubleshooter to test out the connection and the hardware. Can I get the product number for your Pavilion, please. Also, in your Device Manager what do you have listed under Network Adapters.

Hi,

First of all, thank you for replying. I've checked out the Troubleshooting guide and updated the network adapter. The results are the same.

My laptop is about 15 yards away from the router. I appreciate that I won't get maximum speeds at this distance, but my old laptop can still get to almost 100 mps from the same position. The HP gets to almost exactly 50 every time, leading me to think that there's a limit set somewhere.

My laptop is a HP Pavilion 15-n268sa, product number: F9E43EA#ABU.

When I open Network adapters, I can see two objects:

Realtek PCle Family Controller

Realtek RTL8188EE 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi adapter.

Hope this helps.

You may need to check if the device is getting full power from the PC

Enable Maximum option for Transmit power

Also check the Roaming Agressiveness is set to Maximum

Check if you can set the wireless mode to Wireless N

To do this, go to.

Control panel>Network and sharing center>Change adapter settings>right click wifi adapter>properties>COnfigure>Advanced Tab.

Make sure you do Once change at a time to avoid confusion. if you tinker around too much, the device may fail to connect to the wifi router and you will then have to reinstall the wifi driver on the PC to revert back to default settings.

Hi,

Thanks for the reply.

I'm afraid I can't find some of the things mentioned.

I found Roaming Sensitivity and changed it from Low to High. This had no effect, so I changed it back.

Under the Advanced tab, I have amongst other things:

802.11 (Disabled)

Wi-fi Config  (set to Performance, the other option being Wifi).

Wireless Mode:  (set to Auto. The other options are 1EEE 802.11b and 1EEE 802.11b/g. I can't see any option for wireless n.

Just a bit more info.

I've opened up Wifi properties on both my old and new machines.

On my old Acer laptop, the signal quality continually shows 144.4 mbps.

On the new HP, from the same position,  it shows either 58 or 72 mbps.

The driver on my old machine is an Atheros AR5B97.
