Hi,

I am about to buy HP Pavilion dm1-4142nr from Amazon and would like to upgrade the RAM to the maximum of 8 GB. The problem is that I am not sure if the one that I picked up will work flawlessly on the notebook so I would appreciate an advise on the issue. I would like to replace the existing RAM with Crucial 4GB PC3-10600 DDR3-1333MHz Laptop Memory Module Bundle - 8GB, 1.5 V, 204 pin, CAS latency 9

Thank you in advance for the help.

Hi, Niko:

I would like to save you some money...

According to the specs on your PC, it already comes with one 4 GB module, so you only need to purchase another 4 GB module to max out the memory to 8 GB.

The Crucial module you posted should work absolutely fine, but just get one of those 4 GB chips.

Hi Paul,

Normally I would do exactly what you reccomend but the price of 59.99 for 4GB at the HP site is a bit hefty 😉 I can get 8 GB for less then that from most of the web dealers. Thanks anyway, I appreciate your help!

You're very welcome, but I don't understand...

You can get whatever PC3-1333 (10600) memory you want to go with the HP chip already installed.

That's an old wives tale that you have to have matching branded memory.

I mix and match all the time. Never had an issue. As long as the specs and speed of the modules are the same that is all you need.

The only time I replace all the memory with the same brand and specs is if I have to remove all the modules to max out the memory.

Hey Paul, good thoughts! So for this computer (HP Pavilion dm1-4142nr) do you think this memory would work to add to the 4gb it already has:

Thanks in advance for any advice!

Hi:

It should work just fine.

I use Patriot memory for many of my PC's. It works great for me and is priced competitively.

Thanks so much for the endorsement of that product. One more quick question, I was looking for a panel or even some screws to open up the laptop but I can't seem to find any. Do you know how to install the RAM on this particular model? Thanks again!

You're very welcome.

Below is the link to the service manual for your notebook.

http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c03255380.pdf

Please see chapter 4, page 57 for the procedure to install the memory. You will then be redirected to other pages such as page 48, to remove the service door, which is basically the whole bottom of the PC.

1. With one hand, slide the battery/service door latch (1) to release the service door, and at the

same time, use the other hand to press down on the service door, and then slide it toward the

front of the computer (2).

2. Lift the door to remove it (3)

See the illustration on page 49.
