Hi
When I turn on my Pavilion dv4 Notbook the screen is black, the powersupply LED stays on, the Wifi LED is orange, Speaker LED is orange too and the volume adjustment LED is white.
The LED's near capslock and numlock blink. There is this site with several different LED error codes from 1 to 6 blinks. But mine blinks forever without stopping once it has started.
What does this mean and how can I fix it?
Thanks, John

Hello avidHPLover,
Welcome to the HP Forums, I hope you enjoy your experience!
I understand that you are getting a blank screen when your computer starts up and the blinking lights document has not helped as your system continuously blinks so you have been unable to identify a pattern. I would like to ask if you have tried the HP Support document : Troubleshooting Error Messages on a Black Screen that may Occur During Startup or Boot. This document may be more beneficial to you, if this does not help I would like you to review and follow the HP Support document : Testing for Hardware Failures (Windows 7, Vista). Now if you are not able to use either document as you are getting absolutely nothing on the screen when you start your computer. I would advise you contacted HP technical support for repair options.

I have the same problem with my HP dv4-1225dx. I've done everything suggested on this thread. I've also taken out the memory and cleaned the terminals, taken out the battery and blown out the dust from the fan, lifted the processor and put on new thermal paste, and taken out the hard drive and put it back.
The led lights just keep blinking. I thought it was getting alzheimers, but now that I've had it perform the very lengthy memory diagnostics, I know there's nothing wrong with the memory.
When I press the start button, it makes the sound like it's about to engage the hard drive, then it stops and I get the black screen and blinking caps lock and scroll led lights. They don't blink in any sort of code.
I think it has gone on strike, or maybe a go slow. I treat it well so I don't know what its problem is.
After a while--sometimes 2 minutes, sometimes half an hour--the computer figures out what it's supposed to be doing and it starts up. It works normally once it has booted up, except for one thing--it keeps losing Google Chrome and I have to download it again. Is it conspiring with Microsoft?
Also, the battery doesn't charge when the computer is running.
I was quoted $260 to have it diagnosed and repaired and that's just too much for my budget. They're just gonna run the same tests as me anyhow and I doubt they'll find anything.

Hello trishjax,
I understand that you are having issues with your HP dv4-1225dx Notebook PC not starting up correctly as well. I am providing you with the HP Support document: Blank Screen LED Error Codes, which does address the blinking lights. I am also providing you with another HP Support document: Testing for Hardware Failures (Windows 7, Vista), which will test ALL the hardware on your computer.
If you still require additional support please re-post and I will help as I can. Thank you for posting on the HP Forums. Have a great day!

Dunidar,
I appreciate your help, but I did that F2 thing and ran all the tests I could run, and it didn't come up with anything wrong. The blinking LED light, blinking one time, is supposed to mean the processor has a problem, but once the computer figures out that it is supposed to be booting up, eveything works perfectly, so I know the processor is good.
Here's the problem -- When I turn on the computer in the morning when it's cold, I hear it start trying to engage the hard drive, then it stops and the LED lights start to blink. Nothing more happens. The screen is dark because the hard drive has not been engaged. If I stick a DVD in, it sometimes gets the computer going, but not always. Most of the time, I just have to wait while it scratches its head and tries to figure out its next move. If I reboot it a couple of times, like when the diagnostic tests are running and they include an automatic restart, it starts up quicker and I don't have to wait for so long. This leads me to believe there is something on the motherboard that links to the processor that doesn't make contact when it's cold. When it warms up, after the computer has been running for a while, it expands and makes contact, and suddenly everything works. As soon as it cools down after the computer has been off for a while, it doesn't make contact anymore. Does that sound probable? If only I knew what it was so someone could solder it or something.

Hello again trishjax,
Thank you for the update on your issue is has helped. I agree with you based on what you just posted it definitely sounds like something has broken loose of the solder on your computer. The only thing I can suggest is you either contact HP Technical Support for repair options, or go to a local computer repair shop and have it looked at. If it is a hardware issue this is really your only option if you do not know how to do it yourself.
I know it was not the answer you were looking for, but I believe it will help you with your issue. I would like to thank you again for posting on the HP Forums. Have a great day!
