Hi mkdemon,

I understand that you are having a sound issue, since updating to Windows 8.1. First I would try is installing the follow drivers, 'IDT High-Definition (HD) Audio Driver'.

Also to confirm, have you completed the steps above? With uninstalling the driver from Device Manager and then Scanning for Hardware Changes. Did this work for you?
