You need to select download .iso on the Hirens download page. An .iso is a CD image that then has to be burned into a CD using an .iso app like this:

Oh boy, new territory for this ole gram!
ok I have picked the ISO burner download with the wizard for the not so geeky (that would be me :LaughingTears:

It is sitting in my download folder.
Do I click it and install it on this machine?
Then do a reboot and go to Hirens and download the .iso choice to my download folder on this computer?
and then would I open the ISO burner program on this computer to find that file and burn that file to the CD?

Thank you for your patience and kindness... I actually do enjoy learning new things and you are a great instructor, I am just a little bit of a slow learner.

I am also using Windows 10 to do this and I am not really familiar with disk burning on it at all!

I will await your reply before proceeding to install on the ISO burner to this machine     TY

Ok so the light bulb came on and I installed the the .iso software.
Now I am unsure of the Hirens file download.  I will try the one I did yesterday again. But to just be sure am I looking for just one file with .iso extention to burn and then try to boot from on my other computer?

HP Recommended

Oh no, now the download for Hirens looks different today and takes me to Google Ad links of things.
Provost I now I am a pain but can you please post a direct link to the download page for me .... the .iso file I need.  I want to make sure I have the absolute right download.

HP Recommended

This is is the download of the .zip

http://www.hirensbootcd.org/files/Hirens.BootCD.15.2.zip

Download the .zip. Right click on it and extract all. Inside the folder is the .iso and then also a disk burning utility. I would

just use the default windows .iso handler on the .iso file.

So the only file I need out of the Hirens zip file is the .iso file and then I burn it to my disk using the other little utility program I installed earlier?
and then what?
I take the disk and boot from the cd on FRED (my name for the sick computer)
and
what should I see will it boot to the root c: and allow me to do the chkdsk from there?

HP Recommended

PROGRESS....  the .iso file from the zip file is now burned to the disk!
I kept the log but watched it burn 100% and it finished automatically ejected ...

Now back to the question before...

with a twist....   what do you think, assuming this burned .iso disk will boot me to the root c:

should I do chkdsk /f /r OR just /f OR just /r

I am hoping that once I have done the chkdsk that windows will open.... what do you think my chances are 🙂

HP Recommended

Or will it boot from the CD with more options that I might want to consider?  Just a thought from the screenshots of the .iso file I saw on the Hirens site.

HP Recommended

Hirens does have a lot of options but one of them will be to run Mini Windows XP...boots to a desktop and you will see the hard drive in the My Computer and you can run any disk tool on it you want. chkdsk C: /r or /f do the same thing. I usually use "r".

Hard to say what your chances are but this is definitely worth trying.

OK must be doing something not right.  FRED not reading the disk.
On the link to Hirens there are several files one being the .iso file.
Is this the only file I need to unzip and burn to the disk to use?  Because that is the only file on the zip that I downloaded and burned to the disk.
Might have been an error in burning through the .iso burning program.  Will try again using WinZip to extract .iso file. and then burn again to disk.
