Hi all;
Recently acquired a HP Pavilion G6 to try and fix - but so far no luck. Basically it turns on, you can hear fans spinning, but i'm getting no display from the laptop or an external monitor. I have tried taking the battery out and holding power button in for a minute trick, that didn't work. I have also tried reseating and changing RAM, that also didn't work.
It's got an AMD graphics chip in it, so I don't think it's the same problem as the NVIDIA chips that needs reflowing.
I've had it all apart and checked connections are secure, etc. I have removed the CMOS battery for a minute and put it back in, still nothing.
I'm at a bit of a loss, anyone had anything similar to me and managed to fix it? If so what did you do?
Many thanks

Hey JaLWatson,
If I understand correctly, your notebook will turn on and you can hear the fans spinning but the display stays blank. You've done a great job troubleshooting so far. You have ruled out a backlight issue since there isn't an image when using an external monitor either.
Do you see any blinking lights on the keyboard? Such as Caps Lock and/or Num Lock lights?
Have you tried just using one stick of (known good) RAM in either of the two ports? It could be that one of the RAM slots is bad.
If the issue persists, it could be a problem with the motherboard or video chip since an external monitor doesn't display an image either.
Please let me know if you have any questions or if my suggestion helped (this could help other users with the same problem). I'll keep an eye out for your reply.

Hello there, I have just been having the same thing happening to me also. The computer starts fine some of the time and then the screen will go blank (white) I've tried to restart in safe mode and also restoring it to an earlier save point with no luck. I'm just wondering what it is thats the problem

@kerj
If you could provide more information on what you have tried or answer any of the questions from my previous post, it would be very helpful in knowing where to start helping you troubleshoot. See my previous post for the common questions with these symptoms.

I'm sorry you're running into this boot issue. What exactly happens when you try to restart? Does it power back on immediately? Do you have an image on the screen as soon as you power back on?
Does the screen ever flicker when you move it back and forth?
Do you get any error messages or blue screens at all?

Hi there, I´ve exactlythe same problem with my Elitebook 6930p.
I have already done the same things and I also did the RAM changing thing. So I understand that the problem is in the motherboard or video chip. What do you recommend;buy a new laptop or replace one of these components?
Kind Regards

Hey patmedina,
I'm sorry you're running into this boot issue. Yes, if you have already tried all of the above suggestions, the issue will be with either the motherboard or the video chip, as you said.
Depending on your needs and preferences, I would suggest getting a new computer and upgrading to Windows 8. The money that you would put toward a new video chip and/or motherboard would be better spent on a more up-to-date computer. This is especially the case since transferring your files from the old hard drive to a new one is very easy with cloud services or with USB transfer cables.
The prices for a motherboard that comes in your unit vary, but I wouldn't trust any of the lower priced items. If you decide to go with replacing either part, let me know what your exact product number is, so I can look up the specifications and let you know the exact part number for the motherboard/graphics chip for your unit. Your Maintenance and Service Guide lists six different part numbers (page 100) for motherboards that can come with the 6930p series.
Computers are similar to big appliances like refrigerators or air conditioners. With some luck, you may be able to get away with using the machine for another year or so after a major component replacement, but soon or later, everything will need replacing. I hope this advice helps! Please let me know if you have any questions about any of that information! I'm happy to share any knowledge I may have 🙂

Hello, i solved the problem ,its the motherboard. All the g6 series have the same problem both AMD and the INTEL socket tipe.the problem is caused with overheating..i dont know why hp dont make a fix for this problem.the fix should reduce the processor voltage by 0.5v and turn up the fan RPM..Anyway the problem can only be solved by changing the motherboard because its the video chip damage.
