Zaq, I also am unfortunantly a recipient of this wonderful problem... I have a dv4-2045dx Windows 7 Basic and the only keys not working are g, h, '', and backspace (using paste to insert letters... haha). I have tried all mentioned fixes in this thread as well as any others i could find in other forums. My warranty has expired years ago, so i have opened up the laptop to check the ribbon cable and connection inside. Everything seemed to be fine and i'm an electronics gear head so i'm sure i would have noticed... I have checked with BIOS and even uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers. I have hard reset it like you suggested, still no help 😕  and have tried typing in safe mode, other programs and such... NO AVAIL!!! Any other suggestions? I will check back periodically. Thank you so much.

Hello Solesniper.

If you've tried all of those fixes then I'd next try replacing the keyboard itself.  While the cable could appear to be in good condition they are very fragile and it could have a short or other problem.  If replacing the keyboard still does not resolve the issue I'd say that the problem lies with the port on the motherboard or the motherboard itself.

Here is a link to your notebook's Maintenance and Service Guide.  It should be helpful when you replace the keyboard.

I hope this helps.  Have a great day.

Good Evening Ladies and Gentleman,

I seem to be the latest recipient of this little bugger of a problem however being broke as a joke I have always had to do my own troubleshooting and repairs this is my take on the problem in my Pavillion dv7

My entire keyboard falls victim to random acts of pissing me off and not working. Initially I thought it was caused due to overheating from sitting on my lap, not the case, next I ran my entire hand over the keys while powered off this worked... for a few minutes. Next time I got angry and lightly but firmly slapped the right side of the Laptop, in the general area under the biometrics scanner, this worked great for a few slaps. I am currently using an old USB keyboard from a desktop. I will be taking mine into the place where I bought it as it is not paid off. I will post if it is a seperate problem as mine sounds just straight up like a loose connection (which is very very possible as I am a Truck Driver and my truck has wicked vibrations in it) however I will be there watching over the people working on it (like adog watches you eat dinner) as, just like most of y'all, dang near my entire life is stored on this pile of circits and pollution.

Happy Computing Everyone!!!

Guess no one reads previous posts and just posts the same thing over and over. Keyboards are cheap and you can replace them by yourself but odds are if you have the G,H and back space issue it is a motherboard issue and not a keyboard issue. I stated before I replaced my keyboard with a BRAND NEW keyboard and it was a complete waste of time and fixed nothing.

Genrally using simple common sense without even tracing the problem to the motherboard it is odd in itself that it is almost always the same keys that go bad with the HP laptops.G, H and Backspace. Keyboards that fail genrally dont have the same exact keys fail on a multitude of laptops.Yet these HP laptops that have keys that stop working are almost always the same keys. That itself says it isnt a keyboard problem and lies either in the ribbon or the motherboard itself.

Also I state once again that if you Google search HP laptops and G,H, and Backspace issues you will find tons of posts about the same issue with HP laptops.

I wont be surprised if the mods decide to delete this post too like they have two other posts I have made on this subject informing people. The way I see it if they continue to delete posts that state the root of the problem they are just trying to help HP hide the fact that this has been going on for years and HP has yet to fix the cause. No matter how you state it no way this same exact problem should have existed with HP laptops since 2005 and still exist. And this problem is not just the dv7`s. The problem is happeing with high end and low end models a like and with many different HP models.Yet because I state this and get mad that HP refuses to address the problem my posts are deleted for no other reason than to hide the facts. Well if it is deleted again then hopefully at least some members have got to read it.

Im not as much upset that the problem is happening as I am of the fact that it has been going on for so long and with many different HP laptops and that the fact that it continues to happen that it should be covered under warranty after the year is up since the problem keeps happening for the last 8 years or so.

Has anyone come up with a resolution for HP laptops win 7 only certain keys not working? This seems to be a MEGA ISSUE and HP has not resolved it. They don't even have a proper suggestion to certain keys not functioning. I have made sure the driver is up to date on the keyboard. I have installed it and reinstalled it. Those certain keys ARE NOT STUCK! I also replaced the entire keyboard and when I did -I was shocked to see how the fan never properly worked and burt the inside of my laptop.

once in awhile an external keyboard will work but if I hit the L button on my sub connected keyboard the screens lock. I am going to file a complaint with NY consumer protection laws. Whether it is under warranty or not we have rights. We buy a $600 product mine being the HP Pavilion G4-2169se.

i noticed with all the hours of research there was a recall on the original laptop cord for pavilions and presario's which my mom had and it burnt out.

My conclusion is that the laptop cord got so hot it eventually caused a malfunction in the keyboard. My replacement cord still burns to the touch. The laptop always felt like it was on fire since I bought it so about a year ago I started using an external fan it sits on. If HP won't work with me I was referred by the NY consumer product laws complaints to the attorney general. This is a fail on HP and if I need to file a class action lawsuit I will. Everything else works fine. This laptop came with there "cools sense" well it wasn't sensible obviously. HP refers you to a troubleshooting guide and the option of certain keys stopped working isn't available because that's the major problem everyone seems to be having and they won't have a so,union if it's a failed product on their part!!!!!!!!

First off to the guy that posted above me about the fan and the laptop being hot. These internal fans get dusty as heck and need to be cleaned and oiled occasionally. Also since most laptops run only one fan they can burn out to where the fan fails and that will make the laptop very hot and the motherboard and possibly cpu and gpu can fail at some point. Its best to have buy a replacement laptop internal fan because it will fail at some point.

Also those fans that sit under the laptop are a complete waste of money(nothing but a gimmick) and literally do nothting to cool the laptop internally. Air is not going to penetrate the plastic and make the internal parts any cooler. If anything all you are doing is cooling the plastic on the outside of the laptop and thats it.

If you want an external fan that actually works to help cool your laptop buy an external side fan that sucks the air out of one or both of of the internal fan air vents. Dont buy the usb powered side fans. Buy one with a temperature sensor and powered with its own power supply. You can set them on auto to come on at a certain temperature or set them to stay on. I have one that has 5 speeds and it stays on 5 full time when my laptops are on My laptops dont get past 29 degrees celcius with those side air vent fans

You guys and these same useless suggestions......

As I satetd before this has been an issue since at least 2005 if not earlier. Anyone such as myself that has a technical and electronics background can say 100% that it isnt the power cord getting hot or the keyboard needing replaced or a firmware or bios update. Nor will pressing F10-F11 or taking out the battery do anything.

Personally I dont know why you guys working for HP bother to make these suggestions in these threads when you know full well the problem is the poor cheap parts in the  motherboard. If anyone buys an HP its not hard to figure out why the laptops of the same specifications cost more for other brands than the HP models.

The problem that is causing certain keys not to work is because either the mother board keyboard ribbon connector is failing or some of the circuitry leading to the motherboard keyboard connection is failing.

All i know for sure is the mothgerboard is the problem. I replaced the motherboard with a chinese repaired motherboard and it solved the problem.I refused to pay HP for a new motherboard.

HP ignores this problem because they dont want to admit they are releasing cheap quality parts that fail. Its all over Google for over 10 years of keys failing on the laptops. Yet HP doesnt want the consumers to know this. They need a lawsuit against them for it because they have a duty to make laptops that will last more than a year without multiple issues.

This post will probably get deleted like others have but wake up people the problem is their cheap motherboards and these reset suggestions are a waste of your time along with buying new keyboards. 99.99% of the time a new keyboard will not fix the problem.

If I buy parts I will buy refurbished parts from someone else and I certainly wont buy HP again. I have a Dell P4 laptop back from 2005 that is slow but it still has no issues. just shows how quality builds last. None of my old pcs or new pcs have had even half the problems My first HP laptop (their top of the line i7 Dv6  6000 whwhen I bought it) had in 14 months. Monitor failure, keyboard failure, and monitor ribben cable failure. All in 14 months

Hp refuses to stand by their parts period and after a year you are not covered for their poor quality parts. One year of coverage or not as stated the keyboard problem has been going on for over 10 years HP refuses to acknowledge it on the support phone and deletes posts like this that point it out. I cant believe they keep getting away with selling with laptops with very cheap parts and not be held accountable for the high failure rates but they get away with it continuously.

Do yourself a favor and instead of trying to save money on a poorly built HP buy a different brand that costs more for the same specs that will last.

Listen to my post or ignore it. Its your choice. you can guiess and ponder about it and waste your money on new replacement keyboards, waste your tiome contacting support, or try the usless reset suggestions, or try to uselessly resetting or re-downloading your bios....do what you want .......but the problem is the motherboard failure in 99.99% of the cases period.

Your only choice to fix the keyboard problem is by replacing the motherboard or use a wireless usb keyboard.

HP motherboards also have had issues with the motherboard power port burning up the motherboard out. I even soldered new mother board power port to a Dual core HP but it didnt solve the problem. Apparently when the power port burnt up it caused pother parts in the motherboard to burn up too. Had to replace the motherboard in the dual core HP too to get iut working.

Just saying HP laptops have a lot of different failure problems and generally they dont last much longer than a year before you start having issues of some kind. Ive learned my lesson. If you get one that has regular usage and very well  taken care of with no kids in a clean home like mine and dont have issues with their laptops at some point shortly after a year you are lucky.
