Was installing Windows 7 on a HP Pavillion dv9823em (dv9700) and everything went well.  Foolishly, I decided to update the bios to Version:F.34, 3.09M

Everything appeared to go fine with the update, the software prompted that at the time, the current version was F.30

However on reboot, got the dreaded black screen, with fans at high speed.

I followed the bios restore guide as below

http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c02693833

to no avail.  I note that there is a usb restore option discussed, however the guide offers no download links to peform this procedure.

On performing the tips to restore the bios, (hold down windows and b key whilst holding the power button etc) - was presented with a constant beeping (long beep, and x2 short beeps) which continued until power off

I also tried removing the cmos battery for x15 mins, again to no avail

Quite annoyed that the official bios update could fail so badly.

What are my options... again the guide offers no link the usb files needed to at least try the usb option

Hi:

No one that I know of has been able to recover the BIOS after flashing it in Windows 7.

You can search the forums for the dozens of posts regarding this issue.

Time for a new notebook.

HP Recommended

Errr, so your saying Windows 7 is synonymous with destroying a bios on a HP laptop because you run an official bios update via Windows 7?  Doesnt make sense!

HP Recommended

Errr...I am saying that when one attempts a BIOS flash when running an incompatible operating system, one can normally expect that outcome.

Release details

Released:
2011-03-30

File name:
                      [1/1, 3.09M]

Version:
F.34

Compatibility:
Microsoft Windows Vista
Microsoft Windows Vista (64-bit)

Fix/Enhancement:
- Fixes an issue where the system would unexpectedly stop responding and a 0x124 warning window would appear when the notebook was powered off abnormally and then restarted.

It makes all the sense in the world.

When upgrading hardware or operating systems, always read all the available BIOS update information before you upgrade, not afterward.

There are normally no do-overs with bad BIOS flashes like there might be with driver installations gone bad.

Fair point, however be that as it may, doesnt get me any closer to a fix... anyone have the files I need to try the usb restore?

Hello hamacardo.  I understand you'd like to flash your BIOS outside of Windows.

If you download the BIOS file you can open it in a program such as 7-Zip and locate the *.BD file.  The *.BD file is what you need to attempt to flash the BIOS.  You can then try to follow these instructions to attempt to flash the BIOS.

If you have any questions let me know.  Have a great day!

Thanks for the reply, however the HP bios I downloaded and extracted doesn't contain a *.bd file... below is a list of the extracted files and directorys

PHLASH.AUT
PHLASH.INI
PHLASH.LOG

WinPhlash64.exe

Could any of these files be used?  Again this is the laptops factory installed bios - downloaded from the hp website and extracted

Hello again hamacardo.

Unfortunately, I do not see the file (it is normally named *.BIN, *.FD, or *.BD) in any of those lists.  This means that the notebook most likely does not have this feature.  In an event such as this it is going to be best to contact HP Support directly and let them know about the issue.  The number for US/Canadian customers is 1-800-474-6836.  If you're in another part of the world you need to visit HP Support Worldwide to get your region's contact information.

Have a great day.

Things you need:

  1. Floppy disc.
  2. USB Floppy drive.
  3. Phoenix Recovery Disc creator (Download here, Mirror1, Mirror2).
  4. Bios update file (From official web site HP Support & Drivers).

When you got all of mentioned:

  1. Unrar Phoenix Recovery Disc creator (It contains CRISDISK (folder) Autoexec.bat and PHLASH16.TXT).
  2. Run ...\Phoenix Recovery\CRISDISK\wincris.exe.
  3. Select Create Minidos Crisis Disc.
  4. Format it and it will copy 3 files to your new boot floppy (bios.wph, minidos.sys, phlash16.exe).
  5. Now you need to replace bios.wph (on floppy) with yours bios file. Extract spxxxxx.exe (Bios update) which you downloaded from official web site with winrar (right click on it and "Extract to...").
  6. There you will find *.wph/bios.wph file. Copy it to floppy and replace old one. Its name must be bios.wph. Or it wont boot.
  7. After that in archive "Phoenix Recovery Disc creator" is file autoexec.bat. You can modify it as you wish to add extra parameters for flashing process. Parrameters are listed in file PHLASH16.TXT in "Phoenix Recovery Disc creator" archive. Or you can leave it as it is.

Now you have boot floppy with phlash 1.6.5.4 and your bios file.

  1. Take out battery.
  2. Unplug power cable.
  3. Plug in floppy drive.
  4. Insert floppy disc.
  5. Now hold Win+B/FN+B keys and insert power cable and push power button while holding down Win+B/FN+B keys.
  6. After 3 sec let go buttons.

Floppy drive should start working. Not less then 30sec. It indicates that flashing has begun. Or if your bios makes sound than you can observe flashing by sound.
Give it time to flash, better to wait ~10min.

Good luck! Hope it helps.
