Yes, but make sure you install the Intel chipset driver first, the intel graphics driver second, the amd graphics driver 3rd, and the Audio driver driver 4th, then the Realtek LAN driver.

Then do the atheros wlan card.

It doesn't really matter which ones you do after that.

Maybe finish off the chipset drivers section (USB3 and Intel Management Engine Interface).

Just make sure that all devices have been successfully installed and are working before you bother to do the 200 or so windows updates.

Is the atheros wlan card  the Network controller  SP70859 Qualcom driver?

The Intel and AMD display adapter drivers are now working from the win7 driver CD driver install.

I started to install the SP70859 Qualcom Network Controller and was notified that it was already on the computer

c:\SWSetup\SP70859\Setup.exe

and asked if I wanted to over write it.  What should i do?

I am getting punchy.  Disregard last.  Qualcom LAN in on the win7 driver cd and I will install next.

Well Paul, It has been a learning experience.  My most important take away is that the driver install sequence is all important.  All the drivers needed were on the HP Win7 CD's all along.  Selecting install all was the mistake that caused the problem since either the driver install sequence was incorrect (likely) and/or not all the drivers were installed with a single run through.       The later was learned when I hit install on the next driver but fogot to uncheck the remaining last few.  One of those did not install that run.   The first 'install all' run that I did in the beginning I did not know/think to check that all were installed so some/many may not have been installed.  I asssumed they had been.

Win7 is reinstalled now and no Device Manager issues.  Win Update next.

I suspect I will be back but for now thanks so much for your help and expertise.

I let the HP application and driver DVD do its thing once, and I forgot to uncheck some drivers and software too.

I didn't end up in the same predicament as you did, but then I didn't try that on a notebook with switchable graphics.

On any PC, the recommended order of installation for the first few drivers is important.

A lot of folks can get away with haphazardly installing the drivers, but when you have a notebook with complicated hardware, that can turn into a real can of worms, as it did in this case.

In any event, I think you are pretty much home free now.

Just remember to hide any graphics driver updates that windows update may find.

What you do is when you see any windows update you don't want to install, just right click on it and select 'hide update.'

There is also an option to show hidden updates in the windows update menu.
