I had the same issue, for me stopping the Windows Audio service before plugging in the headphones and starting it after did the trick. Hope it helps.

I had this problem, but the problem ended up being easily solved.  The first time you put the headphone jack in, you have to REALLY push in until your jack is completely flush with the laptop side surface.  By first time, I mean,  it doesn't count as a "time" until you do this.  I put the jack in a number of times trying to get it to work, but it didn't.  Then, I discovered it needed that extra push, got it ALL the way in, and it worked just fine.  From then on, easy to push in.  But, initially, it seemed all the way in, wouldn't go further, but then I noticed, a fraction from being totally flush.  REALLY pushed, and that did it.

Thanks buddy. Disabling the audio before plugging in headphone and enabling later on solved the problem.

I've recently been struggling to transfer audio into my two latest laptops. Both have one single jack socket for a headset. Whilst I could use the jack for listening on headphones, stereo recording was impossible. Startech.com produce a Stereo Audio USB External Sound Card with SPDIF Digital Audio. Once I'd identified the inputs to use the problem was solved - no tick, tick sounds on recording and listening is a pleasure again. I hope this helps.

jayengee,

That,s great! You indicated a single jack on your laptops. That would require an "adapter" for "audio-in" and "audio-out" I assume that you must have bought an "adapter". Anyway if it works and the software works enjoy!

It took quite a long time to find something that would work properly. This one does.

I have an HP Spectre with Windows 10 and am having the exact problems described by other users. I have tried all suggestions (yours, the third party ones and other users) to no avail. Sound continues to play out of speakers no matter what I do.

I have two headphones, one of them works and other does not works. The only difference between those two are that one has only 1 line of wire going to both speakers. The other one (which does not works) is usual headphone with no modifications..

It seems like new HP laptops do not support some headphones ( I cant say which ones, as i dont know which one u are using).

However, the earphones I bought recently for about only 3 bucks were able to give proper voice and be detected by my HP laptop (its 450 g2 btw)

U can also use USB to aux out jack.

Or u can use bluetooth headset if that is fine.

Earlier, i tried all the ways said above, and they used to work, but it seems the windows 10 updates may have something to do with this.

I should most likely note, that given that HP's customer service was a joke, I returned the Device in question to the retailer for a full refund and would not touch HP products with a 9 foot barge pole. Given that when I contacted HP customer service they said it wasn't their responsibility to deal with the manufacturers defects.  I have since stuck to custom building all my PC's/Laptops as most retailers don't build with the hardware spec I want and in some cases I just can't trust them to build computers that aren't going to have defects that they then refuse to fix, HP being the only company that I have ever had that problem with.
