Double tapping acts a toggle - it turns from OFF to ON and from ON to OFF

I accidently turned off the touchpad on my Elitebook by trying to open something at the top left of my screen (double tapping on the touchpad).  It took me several minutes to figure out what happened and how to get the touchpad back.

This is a terrible design decision, I hope HP does not make this mistake again.

Downloading synaptics application and disabling touchpad worked for me. This resovled my problem.

to disable= cntrl + dbl tap the light

The double tap in the left hand corner works like a champ... 2 small taps with your pointer finger over the little tiny light on the pad... does the trick.... do the same thing to turn it back on!!!
