Thank you for your quick reply. I previously installed the Cyberlink Youcam software (SP45825) but got an error message stating no camera is present.
In Windows 7 32 Ultimate device manager, "unknown device" will appear under "Universal Serial Bus Controllers" when I boot or have the device manager search for hardware changes. If I have it search online for a driver update for the Unknown device, it returns that the driver software is up to date.
I have tried several drivers from the HP website by "deleting" the unknown device, installing the driver and seeing what happens. A couple of them created a webcam listing under "Imaging Device" (as I recall the section name), but all installed with an error that could not be corrected via online updates so the listing was subsequently deleted.
As Im sure you are aware, this notebook shipped with Vista and things ran fine. I did an over-write install of windows 7 and things still ran fine. When the HD went belly up and I installed a new one is where I ran into troubles. All the other Vista drivers for the notebook seem to be working under 7. I suspect that the loaded driver under Vista migrated over to the Win 7 install. Was there not a Vista driver for this product?
Please note that Youcam IS NOT listed on the HP support site of drivers and software for this model DV6646US. As a result, I am not certain that the program is appropriate for this model. Nonetheless, I installed the version you indicated (SP55774) it, like the other program version, would not cause the webcam to install in device manager. I attempted to manually install it using a driver found in that Youcam folder. It loaded a driver provided by Ricoh, v. 6.1003.101.0. That resulted in a device manager listing of "HP Pavilion Webcam" under "Imaging Devices" but it has an exclamation point Error code 10-Device cannot start. I attempted to update that driver but it returned saying it was up to date.
Do you know if the correct driver is tucked away somewhere in the youcam directory or subdirectory that I missed?

davidb4775,
On the old hdd the drivers were stored in a folder named SWsetup.
So the only way that I know to get the driver back is to run recovery media that have the drivers on it.
Clicking the White Kudos star on the left is a way to say Thanks!
Let me know how everything goes.
Have a good day.

Funny you should mention that as I was also thinking down those lines. Unfortunately, that directory has many subdirectories. My machine now has 67 subfolders under that line. Who knows which one it would be??

You may want to google the hardware ID for the camera and see what turns up.
If you don't know where to find the hardware ID, please read the info at the link below.

Didn't you mention there was an unknown USB device?
That is the camera and if you read the info on the link I posted, it will walk you through how to find the hardware ID for the device.
For the camera, it will probably look something like this:
USB\VID_0A5C&PID_5800

In scrolling through the properties for the Unknown Device that appears under Serial Bus Controller, Hardware IDs is "USB\Unknown"
In case some of the other property listings can shed a light on it, they include:
Device Class Guid (dont know what that is) is {36fc9e60-c465-11cf-8056-444553540000}\
Physical Device Object Name is \device\usbpdo-4
Capabilities (3 entries, each on a seperate line)-00000044, cm_devcap_removable, cm_devcap_rawdeviceok
Location path is PCIROOT(0)#PCI(0400)#USBROOT(0)#USB(2)
Device instance path is USB\VID_0000&PID_0000\5&342F540A&0&2
Dev Node Status (7 entries-each on seperate line) 01806500, DN_NEED_RESTART, DN_HAS_PROBLEM, DN_DISABLEABLE, DN_REMOVABLE, DN_NT_ENUMERATOR, DN_NT_DRIVER
Problem Code is 0000002B
Parent is USB\ROOT_HUB\4&20ba3a5a&0
Container ID is {78f1dd21-9720-11e2-b00d-001b24ad7a8f}
Driver Node Strong Name is usb.inf:Generic.Section.NTx86:BADDEVICE.Dev:6.1.7601.17586:usb\unknown
Most of this is "Greek" to me. Hoping you can decypher.

Hi:
The hardware ID you are looking for is this one...
USB\VID_0000&PID_0000\5&342F540A&0&2
I googled it and couldn't find much on it unfortunately.
You can give it a try and see if you can turn anything up.

Hello Atilabass1989,
I understand your computer does not currently detect your webcam, is that correct? I will be assisting you with this issue.
So that we can get on the same page, what is the full make and model of the computer that you are working with? If you are unsure how to locate that information, take a look at this link and it will assist with finding that information.
If I have been helpful or if you would like to say thank you for me trying to help, click the white star under my name to give me Kudos. I really appreciate it.
Please respond when you get a chance.
Thanks
