Fantastic - I am glad I asked the question as I may not have been so bold as to have tried to extract such a piece from the drive. Your diagram is perfect and thanks for the explanation. I can now go to bed (it is 10.43 p.m. here) in the knowledge that I can try that first thing tomorrow morning.
Thanks once again for your considerable help - you have been very instructive and insightful and your guidance has been most appreciated. Yes, you certainly have helped. I shall select the Kudos - can I do that more than once? 🙂
Have a great rest of day

Another day begins and I was successful in gaining access to the hard drive - much appreciated, your explanation worked. I took the laptop down to a local repairer and they took one look and said it was beyond economic repair. This is due to the NVidia chipset and they have seen hunderds of such computers.
I know that there was a recall of the TX1000 series and wondered if I had any redress with NVidia?
Thanks once again for your considerable help. We are now having fun with the g6.

I've had my HP Pavillion TX2000 for a couple years, but only use it when I travel. I'm told HP is aware of the Black Screen problem and it's a design flaw. I've noticed I'm not alone and there are massive posting all over the Internet from people who have lost all their hard work using this HP notebook. My computer was treated with care and used only periodically for travel, as I said. Then one day just suddenly in the middle of important work, it just went to black screen and stayed that way. I have lights to indicate power, but there seems to be no boot up. There may have been an HP or Windows automated update that said it would reboot the system....but it never came back up noises, just fan noise. This black screen happened a couple of times over a period of several months, briefly at first but I was able to revive the machine with several reboots. Now it appears to have died. I'm told that HP is aware of this issue, but is in denial and will not admit to this problem and recall the machines, because they would rather have you buy a new one from them. If this is true, it's an expensive lesson, but one I will definately learn from. If I am not able to get my computer running, I vow to never buy another HP product and will recommend the same to anyone and everyone I know or meet. If a company refuses to stand behind it's products, they will never get another dime from me!

The answer to all is 'NO'. I have a black screen no writing, no response to any input by any key whatsoever.
If I could get a screen of any kind, I would be able to fix any software issue, but I have no interaction ability. None of the keys change that and I have tried everything listed in these postings, no matter how silly they seem. External monitor does not register either. So what do you suggest now...... buy a Sony?
