HP Pavilion dv7 1232nr
Microsoft Windows 8 (32-bit)

I was having a problem with my pavilion dv7 1232nr where the computer lights turn on, but the monitor remains blank. The error code chart indicates that one blink of the number and cap lock led means that the CPU is the problem. So, since I have to open it to repair it, I wanted to know if the CPU processor could be upgraded? And if so, what would be the best and fastest CPU processor that would work best with 3D cad programs for my dv7 1232nr? Also, if it could be upgraded, would there be anything else that needed to be changed to make the upgrade work?  I can't remember if it is 32 or 64 bit,but I can find out. Could someone please help me with this?

Here's the Service Manual:

Manual

You can use any listed AMD processor and the best is:

AMD Turion™ Ultra Dual-Core 35W ZM-86 2.40-GHz with 2-MB L2 cache

Couple things. While the blink code may seem to be saying the cpu is bad it is much more likely to be the motherboard.

The ZM-86 processor would be a bit faster but would not provide any additional graphics power beyond a faster clock speed.

All the options for this model just range from slightly obsolete to very obsolete so for doing 3D CAD work you really need to look at something more current. The other problem that confronts you is the limited memory. It can take up to 8 gigs but needs DDR2 memory which is very expensive for 4 gig modules.

New ZM-86 CPUs are $20 which should tell you where the level of demand is for this era technology:

For $20 it might be worth trying the new processor and see if it fixes the problem and if not get the new motherboard which would likely not be a lot more than $20.
