Hi @Alysia3,
Thanks for reaching out! A very good day to you. 🙂 This is a great location to get resolutions and interact with experts from the community. I understand that the notebook makes a noise when the adapter is plugged in. I will be a delight to assist you. 🙂
A commendable job was done by attempting it before posting your question in the HP forums. It is always a great pleasure to work with technically competent customers like you. Kudos to you for that. 🙂
We definitely value your relationship with HP tremendously. We appreciate you greatly for doing business with HP and I take it as a privilege to share this platform with you. 🙂
For better clarity and to assist you better I would require more information regarding this.
- Did this happen after a power outage?
- Does the charger overheat?
- Does the notebook freeze when this noise occurs?
For starters, please perform a hard reset.
Link: http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c01684768
After that please power up the computer and check again.
Then please try with a different power cord and adapter if possible by stepping into Best Buy or staples to isolate the issue to the power cord and not the computer.
If the noise does not occur with another adapter, then the charger in question needs to be replaced.
If it continues to happen even with a different adapter, then the notebook needs to be serviced. To get this done please contact HP phone support by following these steps:
Step 1. Open link: www.hp.com/contacthp/
Step 2. Enter Product number or select to auto detect
Step 3. Scroll down to "Still need help? Complete the form to select your contact options"
Step 4. Scroll down and click: HP contact options - click on Get phone number, Case number and phone number appear.
They will be happy to assist you immediately.
If the unit is under warranty, then the manufacturer’s warranty will cover repair services for the unit.
Hope this helps. Let me know how this goes. I genuinely hope the issue gets resolved without hassles and the unit works great. 🙂 Please reach out for any issues and I'll be there to assist you. 🙂
To simply say thanks, please click the "Thumbs Up" button to give me a Kudos to appreciate my efforts to help.:)
If this helps, please mark this as “Accepted Solution” as it will help several others with the same issue to get it resolved without hassles. 🙂
Take care now and have a splendid week ahead. 🙂

Same issue happened to me.product must be defective. This is the he definition of a nightmare.
What do you mean it needs to be serviced? Hp thought it was my speaker. Best buy said it was my hard drive.
Hp should recall and fix. Laptop should never have this death noise. I want a refund

I agree!
I bought the hp Envy notebook [serial number removed] for €1499,00.
I felt I was buying quality. I love music so the Bang & Olufsen sound system was a draw, though, I must say I never heard much difference in what it provided. Three years later I'm told it needs a new motherboard and speaker...
I use my laptop only at my desk. It never travels, never gets jostled or tossed about. It sits on my desk on a large round cork pad to help ensure air circulation. I do not use it for any intensive video gaming, which I mention due to the display driver issues.
It lasted nearly 3 years but then started with the clicking noise, which, after 2 days of checking drivers...discovered it stopped when removing the ac power cord. I tried all on-line suggestions, different outlet, different building, different cord... finally took it to big media retail chain where purchased, Media Markt, and their authorised PC Repair said it needed a new motherboard and speaker, for €400!
Twice back to repair, the 2nd time they could not replicate the problem...3 months now of BS, freezing, clicking, blue screens of Internal Video error and Watchdog... me re-setting Windows OS 10 twice.... horrendous

I have brought your issue to the attention of an appropriate team within HP. They will likely request information from you in order to look up your case details or product serial number. Please look for a private message from an identified HP contact. Additionally, keep in mind not to publicly post personal information (serial numbers and case details).
If you are unfamiliar with how the Forum's private message capability works, you can learn about that here.
Thank you for visiting the HP Support Community.

I have the exact same problem with my HP Envy. I have followed all the steps HP has posted and every other video and post I have found. I also want to know how this can be fixed. Right now after battling this for months, the only solution I can see is never to buy another HP. I also spent more money thinking I was getting quality and didn't. And, like Jenny, I can't hear any improvement with Bang and Olafsen.

Well, the Tech from hp tried to help, several online meetings over a month. We went through the motions but to no avail.
HP then invited me to send in the laptop, at a cost of €200, NOT including any parts that might be required, and NO warranty. No thanks hp. I splurged once on a €1500 "envy" that I thought would be quality, but just **bleep**e and sadly reinforcing a throw-away culture with these Built-to-Breakdown gadgets.

Thanks, jennyb4! There are many of us that I've found in a variety of sites. This obviously isn't an isolated problem. I am now shopping around for a new computer. I will never buy an HP product again (although I was very loyal to the company for many, many years) given they feel no responsibility to find a fix for a problem that is clearly a design or manufacturing error and not the result of anything that we've done.
