Microsoft Windows 10 (32-bit)

Hi everyone,

I bought this laptop a month ago, and it is running very poorly, basically has from day one.

I've only installed a couple programs on it, there is hardly anything running in the background, but everytime I wake it up after sleeping, it runs super slow for about 5 minutes, sometimes more.

When I go to the Task Manager, the resources show the Disc at 90-100%, and almost the same for CPU. The numbers gradually go back down, but it is really frustrating to not even be able to open Excel for the first 5 minutes.

I was running Firefox, and tried switching to Chrome, but it is everything, not just the internet browser.

Any ideas on what I can do? I know I didn't get a top of the line computer, but these are basic operating programs, I'm not running anything crazy. I think I got a lemon......:(

Thank you,

Wendy

Hello @wdeland78

Thank you for posting in the HP Support forum.  Welcome !

I will try to help you fix the problem.

* With regards to Task Manager and the disk activity, can you tell me what is the app/process that uses the disk and generates the higher disk activity ? You may read this article as a reference > https://www.howtogeek.com/108742/how-to-use-the-new-task-manager-in-windows-8/

* With regards to the Sleep/Hibernation issues:

- could you ensure your drivers are all updates - use the Device Manager method described here >> https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c03330139

- could you adjust your settings as described here >> https://support.hp.com/rs-en/document/c03383935

* Back to Windows:

1. Your computer comes with McAfee preinstalled. Is it still active on your PC. I am not sure if this is still present on your PC ... In all cases, remove it as it is known to slow down PCs are certain fimes.

You can uninstall it from Control Panel > Programs and features

and then you have to run this tool >> http://us.mcafee.com/apps/supporttools/mcpr/mcpr.asp

Generally speaking I strongly recommend you uninstall any 3rd party security product (AV, firewall, etc...) and leave only the built-in Windows Defender/Windows Firewall running (do this at least temporary as a part of the troubleshooting process).

2. Optimize

- defragment your Hard Disk Drive > https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/8933-optimize-defrag-drives-windows-10-a.html

- run Disk Clean Up - cleanmgr.exe > https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/3012-disk-cleanup-open-use-windows-10-a.html

3. Download and run CCLeaner (from Piriform) with the extra options checked. Here are instructions
>> http://www.howtogeek.com/113382/how-to-use-ccleaner-like-a-pro-9-tips-tricks/

4. Run the free ESET Online Scanner >> http://download.eset.com/special/eos/esetonlinescanner_enu.exe

Scan your PC for viruses, threats and unwanted/unsafe applications - remove if anything found.

5. Uninstall any programs you definitely do not use but you think might be a bit high on resources. You can uninstall them from Control Panel > Programs and features

6. Extra articles you can read to optimize your PC
>> https://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/37511-optimize-performance-windows-8-a.html

Some ideas there might be overkill (too much).

7. Read the official HP article abour such problems > http://hp.dezide.com/ts/start.jsp?guide=SlowComputerPerformance.net&as=true&section=social

(Follow the appropriate steps in the interactive guide, like "Slow performance in general")
