hi again i managed to fix the problems with the USB.
first off looking in the device manager under USB connections
there was:
Intel(R) USB 3.0 eXtensible Host Controller
Hardware Ids:
PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_1E31&SUBSYS_18A5103C&REV_04
PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_1E31&SUBSYS_18A5103C
PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_1E31&CC_0C0330
PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_1E31&CC_0C03
there was also:
Unknown Device
Hardware Ids:
IUSB3\ROOT_HUB30&VID_8086&PID_1E31&REV_0004&ISD_18A5103C
IUSB3\ROOT_HUB30&VID_8086&PID_1E31&REV_0004
IUSB3\ROOT_HUB30&VID_8086&PID_1E31
I then installed this driver and all now works fine =]

Hey Paul,
I just wanted to start out by thanking you for all the information in this thread. You've made the switch back to 7 seemless for me.
I do have a question for you, or anyone else who may have had this issue. I installed the Intel HD graphics 4000 driver in the machine, and it works, but it doesnt give me the higher resolution that it did with windows 8. The max is 1366 x 768.
Does anyone have any solutions to increase the resolution to what it was before?

You're very welcome
What model notebook do you have?
You posted under the ENVY m6-1164ca, and that model has all AMD hardware.
If your notebook only has the Intel graphics (not switchable), see if installing the HD 4000 notebook graphics driver directly from Intel works better.

Hi:
This would be the latest Intel driver which should work on your model.
I note that on the product specs page for your notebook, the display is advertised as having a maximum resolution of 1366 x 768, so I don't see how you can get any more than that, no matter what driver or operating system you use.

Oh you are correct. That is another thing I should have checked.
I am so sorry.
Well it seems everything is ok then.
Again, I have been following this thread for some time, debating if I should go along with the change in os and you have helped to make it seemless.
Thank you again sir.
