I am also one of the many who can not get my Audio Output Device back again for some reason. I also thought it could be the Vista program. So I upgraded to Windows 8 Pro. And guess what. I STILL DO NOT HAVE ANY SOUND. Oh, and by the way, not only did my sound device disappear when I still had Vista, but so did my CD/DVD DRIVE, which still is not being reconized. So I have no clue for the first time in my life working with my stupid computers. I am this close..... to throwing the DAME thing out the window in freeway traffic!!!!

I have a hp pavilion entertainment dv2840se and I have had many problems from the start. First the battery has never worked, have to be plugged in at all times. Then my sound audio device start/stop and now completely gone, and now also my cd/dvd device can not be reconnized either. I have tried everything under the sun. I have gone through the reinstall of vista, the drivers, through the device manager, you name it I have done it. I decided that every time windows did its stupid update that is when things would disappear until the next update then it would come back, then it would update again and then be gone again until there is nothing. So I thought maybe it was because it was a Vista; so I updated to windows 8 pro, and nothing came back still. I JUST DO NOT KNOW WHAT TO DO. THERE IS NOTHING IN THE DEVICE MANAGER TO FIND TO REINSTALL AND I DO NOT KNOW WHAT TO DOWNLOAD THAT IS COMPATIBLE WITH THE NEW OS. I REALLY DO NOT WANT TO GO BACK TO VISTA. Besides, many were saying that going back to the original manufacturing install was not helping either. So folks, what do we all do. Is this the ply of sly to get everyone out there pissed off enough to just go buy a new computer? If anyone knows how to fix this please let me know. thanks

Hello Rawr.  I understand you're being told that you do not have an audio device installed.

I took a look at your computer's software page and notice many operating systems listed.  What version of Windows are you currently running?

Another good option (if you're using Windows 7 or Windows 😎 is to run HP Support Assistant and it will automatically search for and install the drivers.  Here is a link to HP Support Assistant.

I'll keep an eye out for your reply.  Have a great day!

Same problem, and I've seen this before - several times on this HP laptop. The HP Support Assistant did not fix the problem. It updated the driver, but Windows still thinks no device is installed. But the device map shows it present and working well.

The problem seems common - the solutions minimal, and ineffective for me. Be nice to find a real answer.....

Resolved this with HP Technical Support Chat. Bottow line was we uninstalled the driver and rebooted. Windows 7 recognized hardware without a driver and installed the driver anew, set the pointers, etc. Works fine now.

I am convinced that this is a reoccuring problem with HP laptops and Microsoft Windows updates. But if we can remember the solution it is only mildly irritating.

Hello bobsabo111,

I see that you are having problems with the sound on your HP computer? I would like to help with the issue but I need some information.

Can you provide the model and product number of the computer? Here is a link that shows you how to find that information.

Can u give a detailed description of your problem? How long have you been having the issue?
