Recently I cannot get sound when the laptop is connected through the HDMI to my amplifier (it used to work before).

In my "manage audio devices" I have only speakers / headphones / SPDIF

It used to work when SPDIF was connected but suddenly its not working anymore

I tried to remove the "Conexant High Definition SmartAudio 221" and re-installing its newest version , but it doesnt work.

Can anyone help me ?

This counts (to some extent) as success.
Sadly, it doesn't work with your preferred equipment and I am sorry for that.
Thanks for reporting back!

Welcome to the Forum.

OK, I am not the expert - I'm the one who showed up.  I can point you to where the answers have been for others in your situation.  If you can read and extrapolate what you need then you may get the answsers you seek.

What do I mean?  The names of the drivers are not the same, and the names of the machines are not the same for the members in the other post(s), but the methods to re-install those drivers would work and the methods to check the rest of the setup might be enough the same that it would work.

For example, to get drivers to install when direct reload won't work, try Uninstall and letting the system find and reinstall them at reboot.  Also, reloading from the website is not the same as updating from the Device Manager.  Read the post below and glean the details from the comments.

Note that the NVidia sites below also have other pages within them - be sure to check for related subjects.

Have a Philips TV?

Finally, though it's probably not related to your current issues, you might want to take a look at this document to make sure you haven't run afoul of something else in your sound setup:

(For others reading this post, there are separate documents for Windows 7, see the above Vista doc for the link.)

Do a search of the Forum posts - there's lots of information here, even if no one responds directly right away.

Good Luck!

I do hope this helps!

Kudos are Earned!

Hi Mr. Dragon

Thank you a lot for your elaborated answer

Unfortunately, I already serached the forum and followed instructions for cases that were similar to mine.

I updated the Conexant High Definition SmartAudio 221 (uninstalled and installed) but the problem was not solved.

In the example you sent the link the guy had an Intel on-borad graphics card so it doent fit my computer

I could realy use instructions (in general) related to my computer hardware - what should I download and install in order to solve the problem

Apologies - you did write Amplifier and for some reason I saw TV.

"How did I get rock out of that?"

I'll check -on this for you...

Question:

what is the equipment on the other side of the computer? The amplifier - what is it?

Things to Check while I'm doing that:

Is there anything else physically attached to your computer now that wasn't attached to it previously?

Check to see if anything has been updated (Windows updates that were done automatically).

Start --> search for Windows Updates --> Click to open  --> View Update History

HP Support Assistant does its own separate updates, if you are running the latest version of HP Assistant:

HP Support Assistant --> Maintain --> View History

Why Check Updates?

The value of checking to see if any updates have been done while you weren't looking (so-to-speak) is to see if it's worth the step of simply invoking the Recovery Manager restore point and taking your system "back in time" to a point just prior the when the updates were done - to when the connection to the amplifier worked.  If it's software, it's the simplest option.

About using Recovery Manager:

Note that changing the restore point (Going back in time) does not disturb your "user files", that is, it won't delete your personal data files.  Changing the restore point DOES remove computer/system programs and updates loaded after that date and time.

Response 2:

If you have not done so, please try this - it's one of the things that does fix a number of glitches that do not make sense (stuff that breaks for "no reason").

The Hard Reset

Disconnect all external devices first.

Remove AC power and the battery

Press and hold power button for at least 20 seconds (Dragon-fur says, "... I like longer than 20 seconds".  I've read some people recommend as long as 60 seconds. ??")

Reinstall only AC power for first startup.

 Power on

Test (adding only necessary peripheral devices for first test)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Next time you shut down the system, put the battery back in.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If you have not seen this, it's a good resource to have at hand for reference:

http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c00833257

Your Support Web Page shows a selection of audio drivers - are either of the other two related to your current issue?

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareCategory?os=2093&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&sw_lang=&product=3686...

Have you tried doing an Uninstall of the driver (in Device Manager) and then doing a "Scan for Hardware Changes"?

This may force a different kind of "reconnect" as the driver is reconnected.  (Still assuming software is glitching.)

Have you tried disconnecting the hardware on the other side (amp side) and cleaning it / wiggling it?

Is the HDMI cable "Medium" grade or above - it's just 1s and 0s - quality makes a difference.    (This is a rhetorical question - I don't want to get into a discussion on the merits of HDMI brands).  Smiley Happy

Response #3

Found this and it corroborates what I've found before on this subject:  Order of events does matter

Note that once again, the subject is TVs and not amplifiers - your situation is more unique than is convenient.. Smiling.

Nonetheless, the rule of Order-of-Events should apply.  The following description is particluar to the setup that worked for an individual - it may not work Exactly as described for you in the sense that options in Vista and Windows 7 may differ slightly (and this may have been for Windows 7). The context is different due to the discription being based on a  computer and HDMI TV setup.

NOTE:  If this does work, the "Hard Reset" rule applies - it should "stick", that is, you shouldn't have to do it this way each time - it's just a matter of getting things lined up again.

Order of Events - A "Hard Reset" of the HDMI Audio Setup:

  • Enable Digital Audio (S/PDIF)
  • Connect HDMI  from computer toTV’s HDMI/DVI input port
  • Set your TV (amplifier) input to HDMI/DVI input.   (You won’t have sound yet.)
  • Turn of the TV (amplifier).  Shut down the computer.

  • Boot the computer - wait for it to boot all the way.  Log in.
  • Sound should be "dead" - no system sounds at this point.
  • All the audio should be going through the HDMI port.
  • If not, and you are getting sound, try setting "Digital Audio" setting (if you have it) as an option, [quote] "although this should not be necessary."
  • Remove any headphones and any other non-HDMI output from computer and Reboot.
  • If you get sound, it's still not ready - play with the sound output.
  • When you get it to the point where the sound is "dead" (while the HDMI port is still connected) after you reboot, you are ready.
  • Turn on the TV (amplifier).
  • Check for Sound through the HDMI port.  Should be working.

Quote from the Original Post:

"Once you get the TV sound output working, yuou can use the TV audio output to connect to ... Speakers"

I tried one more thing before trying messing up with drivers

I connected the laptop to the TV to see if the sound will work this way - and it did !!!

Which means the problem is not in the laptop but with my reciever.

Now I need to find a solution under these new revelations...
