Product: HP Envy 15-j151sa
Operating System: Linux

I recently purchased a brand new HP Envy 15-j151sa laptop. Being an Ubuntu user I installed the latest LTS version of the O/S, namely 14.4.02. When the OS has loaded the fan spins up to full speed and stays there, whis is very noisy and doesn't seem right. I'm trying to get the fan to slow down so I've been trawling HP and Ubunut forums but nothing has given the right answer so far. I've tried:

 

1) Looking at the BIOS settings. Nothing there seems obvious

 

2) Installing lm-sensors, then running sennsors-detect. The trouble is, no sensors are detected.

This is relatively common on laptops, where thermal management is
handled by ACPI rather than the OS.

 

3) Running pwmconfig. Again, no sensors detected.

/usr/sbin/pwmconfig: There are no pwm-capable sensor modules installed

 

The O/S has all system updates installed. I haven't tried cleaning the fan, which many forums suggest, as the laptop is brand new and so hasn't had time to accumulate any dust!

 

Has anyone else come across this problem with Ubuntu on Envy 15 and managed to find a fix?

Having looked a bit further, I think I have found the cause for much of the noise. When I installed Ubuntu the very first thing I did was to install Google Chrome. It seems that one of the Chrome processes is consuming 100% of one of the cores, which is more than likely increasing the termperature of the CPU and causing the fan speed to increase. After killing the offending process the speed (and noise) of the fan decreased significantly.

 

It still doesn't seem ideal, in that the fan is considerably more noisy than my existing Acer that I bought this to replace. I do wonder if the fan is working harder than it needs to, and I still feel frustrated by a lack of control over it / a view of what it is doing. So any suggestions on that front would be greatly appreciated!

The same problem with my HP envy
