Hello,

I have an HP Envy M6-1148ca, and I have a question about the orange light on the HDD indicator. I know that it turns orange when the hard drive stops because the laptop is dropped or damaged, but I recently noticed that it turns orange when I shut the lid of my computer to put it into sleep mode. It turns orange for a split second and then sleeps. I also noticed that it turns orange when I boot it up from a "Shut Down" or "Restart", also for about a second. Is this normal, and why does it happen?

Edit: I also notice this orange light when waking up the computer from sleep. There is also a sound that the hard drive makes, similar to the CD Drive spinning up when waking up.

Blah_Blah,

Orange, white, and sometimes blue those are the colors that you will most likely see on the hard drive activity light. The only cause for concern is when the light is solid and the computer is responding very slow or not responding at all that’s when you have some sort of problem that  could be major. But I believe what you're seeing is ok and not a cause for concern.

Please respond back at your earliest convenience.

Thanks

Hello Blah_Blah,

I understand you have questions about the hard drive indicator light, is that correct? I will be happy to help you.

When that light is active that means the drive is being accessed by some type of source. A lot of the examples you have provided would make sense of why the drive light is active.

I know that the Hard Drive Indicator lights up when programs or anything accesses the drive. On my laptop (HP Envy M6-1148ca), the indicator flashes white when in use.

What does it mean when the indicator turns orange?

Blah_Blah,

The orange light indicates the activation of the Protectsmart hard drive protection. Looking at your specs your drive does come with that technology, also you may notice the computer freeze for a second as well. This protection is supposed to minimize the loss of any data due to a sudden drop or sudden movement of the computer.

I see this orange light for about a second once I shut the lid of my computer to put it into sleep, or simply booting up the computer. Since there is no sudden drop or damage done to the computer, is it normal to see an orange light in those cases?
