I have a Compaq Presario v5000 running Windows 7.  When I hit the power button I hear the fan for about 2 seconds and then nothing.  No message on the screen and I cant even shut it off unless I remove the power source.  I have tried the hard reset and reseting the memory and hard drive and still nothing.  Any suggestions?   PLEASE HELP!!!!!

Nothing was done to it before this happened besides regular updating

Hey, momofmorgan.

Sound like the fan or Hard Drive giving you the issue.

I see the you reseated the Hard Drive. Did you take the HD out and tried to boot the notebook?

This video will show you how to take it out. http://goo.gl/w6zDq

Hey, donbia.

Give me the exact issue you're having.

Does the light on the keyboard stay on but not the screen?

Or does the entire notebook shut down ?

Give me a description about the issue.

THX 🙂

I have the same or like problum with my laptop, Yes the power light stays on, the computer comes on the screen flashes then shuts down, in a few seconds the laptop comes back on the power light is on but the screen is black, in you put a light on the screen, you can see the xp outline.

If I hook it to an external montor, bootsup and everthing works narmal as long as you have it on, does not shut down, but it won't change from the montor to the lcd screen.

I have replaced the cable from the motherboard to the lcd screen, two diferent ones, replaced the inverter two different ones, replaced the lcd screen one time, because there were lines in the orq, after I replaced the hinges. I have also put the old lcd screen back in, no change. It used to show the compaq logo before going to black screen but that was without a hard drive or operating system, It now has a hard drive and operating system, but still just flashes and go's to black screen. Also it use to, when it set overnight, no hard drive or operating system, boot up ok and go into the bio's. then after that it would do what is doing now.

I have reset the laptop per HP derictions, same problum. I am in the process of checking the contections on the plugin on the mother board to see if there are any bad solder joints or loose joints, when the lcd hinges broke.

I would think since the latop works with montor that the mother board, memory, video card and processor is working normaly. Just a problum between where the cable plugs into the motherboard and lcd screen. maybe flaky voltage, I am getting some dignostic testing equment to test the motherboard, inverter and lcd blub, have not recived as of yet, small cost for the testing items, tired of just replacing items.

I also was thinking the laptop was going into hibernation, tryed to use touchpad to bring it back on, but nothing, pushed on the keys, nothing, pushed the power button, nothing, just go's off, when turned back on same problum.

If there is anything more you can think of please  do.

Seems like a hardware issue with the screen.

I would get the entire notebook checked out.

Call HP @8004746836

Or try and get somebody locally to service the notebook. Looks like something a little deeper than a software issue.

Thanks for the info,

I had bought a lcd screen on EBAy in which the seller said it was testred and good, taking the sellers word, I ignored the screen and checked out every thing other then the lcd, not wanting to buy anymore items to chance test I bought a lcd bulb tester, when I tested the lcd it would only show about 2/3 of the screen dimmly lighted, in a orange color, which is indicative of a blub going bad, further  I found out when this happens there is an impedance set up, that laptop preceives as a falure and the the inverter and or system board shuts down.
I put my old screen back in and my laptop booted right up and xp loaded. The problum I have with the old screen is it has horizontal lines in it, but I can still see to use the laptop.  I would imagine that something pressed on it? the lines are horazonal  three lines spaced evenly from top to bottom, I would not think that is a result of a cracked screen. Further the lines seem to be above the display, as you move the mouse around it is under the lines going across the screen. I would think it has something to do with lcd cover over the lcd. what to do to fix other then replacing the lcd?

That would be it. Replace the LCD. Apply pressure from the back of the notebook and see if you get lines on the screen. If so that is a result in crack LCD.

Your best bet would get a local tech to take a look at it.

If you're able to see on it now and it only comes up if pressure is being presented from the back then you will be ok for now until it goes out.

The problum I have with the old screen is it has horizontal lines in it, but I can still see to use the laptop.  The lines are horazonal  three lines spaced evenly from top to bottom,  Further the lines seem to be above lcd,  as you move the mouse around it is under the lines going across the screen. I would think it has something to do with plasic covering the lcd, or frequency coming out of the inverter possibly, I don't need to press on the back of the lid, the lines apper when booted up, pressing on back of lid makes no difference.

The 3 lines are evenly spaced from top to bottom, they are about as thick as bold words. and over the displayed items, if you move the mouse it moves under the lines. since they are perfeckly spaced and in a perfectly strait line, I would not think they would be a broken screen, looks more like a bad cable or inverter frq. problum, what do you think? I can still see to use the laptop, just that the lines a distracting.
