I had problems with the screen on this machine recently resulting in it having to be crash stopped a number of times. The screen has now been fixed but it takes ages to load up and once it has it just hangs. I can get into the BIOS etc using the escape key and have managed to do a backup of the important stuff but if I now do a restore to factory settings will this result in a restore to Win 10, which I upgraded to last year under the free offer, or will it restore to the original win 7 operating system?

Hi,
A restore to Factory Settings would reinstall the original operating system - ie Windows 7.
However, as long as the existing installation of Windows 10 is activated, you can just perform a clean installation of Windows 10 as detailed in the guide on the following link. Note: At the activation screen, select 'I don't have a Product key' - Windows will activate automatically once the installation has completed.

Thank you David,
I dont know if I can do this as I think I will need to be in windons with a browser open to access the link and its not responding most of the time when I try going in to win 10. Can I access this through the HP recovery section do you know?
Cheers,
Rob

Hi Rob,
If possible, it would be best to use another PC to create the Windows 10 installation media and then use this to reinstall 10 on your notebook - theres a guide on how to create installation media for another computer ( and the tool ) on the following link.
https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/software-download/windows10
The main reason I'm suggesting this approach is because the Recovery Options present on the hard drive ( ie Factory Reset to Windows 7 ) often fail to work correctly if the machine has already been upgraded to Win 10 ( Note: If you're intending to use your Recovery Media - dvd discs or flash drive - this method will still work fine for reinstalling Win 7 ).

Thank you again David I did think there could be issues with loading the WIN 7 recovery.
The problem I have is my other PC is runing Vista and when I attempt to get to the location for the download it tells me I cannot access this on the machine I am using. Apparently I also need a 3 gb flash drive for this and I only have a HDD with this sort of capacity and that contains my backup, which I dont want to compromise.
I will have to ask a friend if they are able to do this for me but thanks for your continued help you have pointed me in the best direction.
Cheers,
Rob H
