I performed a system refresh to the original settings and everthing appeared to go as normal.  While performiong the numerous Windows updates, I noticed the battery indicator says "No Battery Installed."  I found a couple solutions on dealing with this problem (none of the other solutions worked) and one indicated updating the BIOS.  I checked and the BIOS is at F.07 and the current version is F.41.  I downloaded the update and started the process from within Windows.  The system reboots to begin the process but when the BIOS update starts I get the following message:

"An important System BIOS update is available, but the computer is not connected to external power.  Please connect external power and select Enter to continue."

The computer is connected to the original HP power supply since this is the only way to get it to turn on.  I tried removing the battery and starting the update with only the power supply connected and get the same result.

As an aside, I have tried inserting a different battery as I have more than one of these laptops.

Thanks for the information.  I think there may be a totally different problem though.  I fooled around for a while taking the battery out, disconnecting the power and holding down the power button for 40-60 seconds.  I finally got the BIOS update to work, but the battery still indicated it would not charge and the system diagnostics said there was not a battery installed.

I disconnected it and went on with other things.  Today I plugged it back in and for some reason, everything works fine.  I really don't like problems that seemingly solve themselves as I tried several options to get it to work.
