Good afternoon all

HP Pavilion Sleekbook 14 PC Windows 8.1 64-bit and all the updates.
I have just received update for my laptop and updated it and twice I have lost Wi-Fi service.
The update was “Qualcomm Atheros QC9000 series wireless LAN Driver for windows 8.1” that kills Wi-Fi router and lost service.
Has anyone else had this problem!

Hi @stanofsaxons

I saw your post regarding the problem with the Qualcomm Atheros driver that seems to have taken out your wireless. I haven't heard about anyone else having this issue with the update but I will be keeping an eye out for it.

There are a couple of things you can try. You can go to your Device Manager and under Network Adapters right click the Qualcomm Atheros adapter and select Properties. This click on the Driver tab and there will be an option to Roll Back Driver. This will bring you back to the old driver and you should be able to connection.

You can also try the troubleshooting steps listed in this HP document Troubleshooting Wireless Network and Internet. In addition here are a few generic wireless troubleshooting steps that I would recommend trying:

Power cycle the network:

1. Shut down your notebook.
2. Unplug the power to your router.
3. Unplug the power to your modem.
4. Wait at least 45 seconds.
5. Plug in the modem, and wait for it to come back online.
6. Plug in the router, and wait for it to come back online.
7. Turn on your notebook, and test your connection.

Reset the TCP/IP settings:

1. Go to your start screen/menu and type CMD.
2. Right click on the command prompt icon and chose Run as administrator.
3. In the window that opens type "netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt" without quotes, and press enter.
4. Restart your PC and test.

Reset the winsock catalogue:

1. Go to your start screen/menu and type CMD.
2. Right click on the command prompt icon and chose Run as administrator.
3. In the window that opens type "netsh winsock reset" without quotes, and press enter.
4. Restart your PC and test.

Please click “Accept as Solution ” if you feel my post solved your issue.

Thank you,

Troubleshooting Wireless Network and Internet
Power cycle the network:
Reset the TCP/IP settings:
Reset the winsock catalogue:

I have tried all of them and none worked so I’m sticking with the old saying if it isn’t bust don’t fix it

I took time out of very busy time to see if I could get it to work but I was unable to do so… so I’m just keeping the old driver as it seems to work fine.

Many thanks for your suggestions

I have recently purchased an HP 15 Notebook PC.  Out of the box it worked extremely well.

Today the HP Support Assistant lit up and recommended some updates to the driver for the Qualcomm Atheros QCA9000 Series Wireless LAN Driver.  I accepted the recommendation and initiated the update.  It completed without complaint and requested a re-start.

Disaster.  After the mandatory re-start the WI-FI did not work.  The Windows Network Diagnostics Troubleshooter confirmed the problem but could not solve it.  In order to regain connectivity I was forced to attach to the router using a LAN cable.

I tried the HP forum, and downloaded and executed a solution from a similar-sounding topic.  This made no difference.

Clearly lost, I decided to recover from the backup taken during the initial update.  This worked.

I am disgusted that an HP update should corrupt the software in this way.  Was it not tested?

I am also disgusted that there is no adequate solution to what must be a common problem - my machine and software must be very common - certainly not unique.  Perhaps the answer is to ignore (or even uninstall) the HPSA.

I am also worried that an update appears to be necessary, but will evidently not work on my machine.

Where do we go from here?
