Microsoft Windows 10 (32-bit)
My laptop froze on me. I went to restart it and now It Shows the HP Symbol and it says "preparing automatic repair." Then the screen goes to a blank black screen. Is there anything I can do?

Sounds as if the hard drive is dying and will have to be replaced. Immediately after powering on start tapping the esc key. This should open a menu where F2 System Diagnostics is a choice. Tap F2 key and run the tests.

Hard drive short DST check: FAILED

Short dst:Fail = the hard drive has failed and will need to be replaced. If you are still in warranty HP will replace it. If not a retail 2.5" laptop SATA hard drive can be used. Just be sure to get one of at least equal capacity as the original in order to use HP Recovery Media to install Windows. It can be larger, but not smaller capacity. For instance you have a 500GB hdd so you could use a 750GB hdd but not a 320GB.

What about any installed software or stored files on the computer. Salvageable? Forgive me I'm not very computer literate past a common user level and this is my work computer with important stuff.

Am so sorry but all the data will be gone .. the chances of the backingup the files depends upon the mood of the hard drive ,through recovery media you might be able to backup your data such as documents and pictures but thats not guaranteed.. but u can try your luck
HP Recommended
Recovery media is the disk or flash drive which contains the operating system of your computer...

Ok last couple of questions. Why the failure? What kinds of things typically cause this? Is it worth buying a new hard drive or just getting a new computer? What's the difference between just getting a hard drive vs getting new laptop?

Thr are tons of reason that can cause thia type issue

Especially, a virus attack or corrupted software

Buying a new computer that depends how old this computer is

The hdd will cost you around $200 and a new computer can cosf you more than $350 if u want to purchase a good computer that will last long
