Hi,
If you're using a 'business class' machine, I doubt it will produce a halt code.
If you have a consumer model which does produce a halt code, just post back with this code.

Hi,
I had an 8540p for which I did not know the BIOS password. I contacted HP and they emailed me an SMC.bin file. I was able to reset the password on that computer.
HOWEVER, I recently purchased a used HP 8670w and it also has a BIOS password I do not know. I have two questions:
1) Can I use the SMC.Bin file to reset the password on this machine? If so, I don't remember the procedure to reset the password using the SMC.bin and I lost the email with the instructions; does anyone know how to use that SMC.bin file?
2) If I can't use that SMC.Bin file, is there any way I can reset the password or will I need to contact HP again with the serial number or BIOS info on the newer machine?
Thanks for any response.

I think you can clear it when the HP logo shows up after you turn the computer on, hit the F10 key and there is an option there
