I had a virus on my computer, so I used the advanced boot thing and reinstalled windows to fix it. Before doing this, I used the backup option that was available to me, to back up all of my files. I didn't have a USB drive to stick the data on, so I used a series of 7 discs, which it didn't seem to have a problem with. However, since completing the reinstall, I haven't managed to restore the files to my laptop.
When I put the first disc in, which contains the Restore.exe application, and run it, it gets 23% of the way through and then gives the error 'The destination drive is not connected'. This seems strange because the destination drive is just my laptop, but presumably what it means is the next disc. However, I also can't just remove the current disc and insert the next one - the drive doesn't open for ages, and once it does I get the same error.
I also can't copy all of the files to my laptop first, it just says "can't read from the source file or disc".
Does anyone have any idea what's happened? I trusted the HP backup thing but now I'm regretting it. Is there any way to get back my data?

I came across your message about the PC recovery issue and wanted to share my suggestion with you 🙂
Going through your post, I am afraid that the backup during the recovery was not successful. It might be also possible that the virus that affected your PC also corrupted your data and hence the backup was not completely successful.

Hi Dvortex,
Thanks for your response. If it was unsuccessful, why wasn't there an error when I did the backup? I used the HP backup system, is that not a reliable method? Luckily I haven't lost anything too important, but this could have been a real problem if there was more on my laptop at the time of doing the backup. Are there any plans to improve this system?

I have brought your issue to the attention of an appropriate team within HP. They will likely request information from you in order to look up your case details or product serial number.
