I've recently converted my HP Pavilion dV4-2153cl Entertainment Notebook PC to run Ubuntu (Lucid, 10.04) instead of Windows 7.  Since making the switch, I've noticed that my memory card reader is no longer recognized.  After looking into the problem a bit, it seems that there is no Linux-compatible driver to interface with the card reader.  The documentation that HP provided with my notebook is pretty minimal, but after running some diagnostics with Ubuntu I discovered the following PCI devices, which I believe refer to my card reader:

03:00.1 Class ff00: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. Device 5288 (rev 01)
03:00.2 SD Host controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. Device 5288 (rev 01)

Does anyone know if HP supports a Linux-based driver for this device?  If not, than why not?  As a first-time HP customer, and Linux-enthusiast, I am a little dismayed that HP is not more invested in supporting its Linux customers.  I hope I am wrong about this, but it's the impression I've been getting.

Any help you can provide would be appreciated!  Thanks!

Welcome to the Linux world. I have been a Linux user for 10 years and I can tell you that you will get no support except from fellow users. Learn to use the Linux user boards and also google.

This might help:

Linux board

put a memory card in the slot and run from the command line:

sudo modprobe usb-storage

If this solves your problem, try adding usb-storage to your /etc/modules file so that when your computer restarts it will automatically load the usb-storage module.

You may even have to manually mount the memory card. Install gparted from apt-get and check if the memory card does not show up as an unmounted storage device...then you can manually mount it by using the command line. You may also have to edit the fstab entries to make it hot pluggable.

Post back if you do not understand any part of this or need more help.

Thank you for your reply!  I apologize for not getting back sooner -- I got kinda frustrated and gave up on it for awhile.  Still having the same problem.  My card reader came integrated with my laptop -- it is not a usb device.  Following your advice, I installed gparted, but the only device it seems to find is my hard drive -- no unmounted storage devices.  I am not familiar with editing fstab entries.  Could this be used to mount unrecognized pci devices?  Any help you provide would be much appreciated!
