I'm cautiously optimistic.  I downloaded the MEI driver and I can actually shut down the computer normally.  Some steps in the installation weren't executed it appears, but all seems well for now.  I found a new driver for my touchpad and installed that as well, but that didn't work (but that's another story).

The latest TouchPad driver doesn't function properly in Windows 10 either.  You can follow a similar process here to downgrade to an earlier version that works correctly.

I actually had issues installing the earlier version on the driver. Windows wouldn't let me uninstall the v11 driver. I would error out. I had to restore to an earlier point in time THEN uninstall the driver and install the v9 driver. After that point, sleep mode starting working again. But it would wake on its own. Even when shutdown. I disabled hibernation and "Allow wake timers" in the advanced power settings.

Note that in the steps I posted, I mentioned you should NOT uninstall v11, but rather just install v9 or v10 (which will then replace v11).  I too was unable to install v9 initially after uninstalling v11, and actually had to reinstall v11 first before I could get v9 installed.

Also, thanks for posting the MEI explanation!  🙂

I loaded the 8.1 driver for my touch pad and I'm pretty sure this will do the trick.  I noticed there was no option to set profiles.  You made changes, applied them and that was that.  I'm still cautiously optimistic, but I think I'm in a better place now.

This is so bizarre because my son went through the upgrade-from-hell for his Windows 7 machine.  My upgrade went smoothly, but I'm the one finding all these annoying problems.

Thanks to all!

I have an HP Envy 17t, Windows 10 pro 64bit, i7-4510U CPU

I updated to W10 the first of Aug. I didn't have any problems with sleep feature not working correctly until several recent up dates from HP Support Assistant. One update being the install failure of the fingerprint sensor Driver.

I have followed the steps to update the Intel(R) HD Graphics Family Driver. It did in fact update and so far the sleep feature seems to be working correctly after rebooting. Also my previous settings are remaining, indicating it’s not rebooting after I close the lid.

I hope this is not premature as I have only tested it twice. Once sleeping for 15 min and then for 30 min. If the problem reoccurs I’ll repost.

Thanks! Hemilios

UP DATE: The above fix did not work for me after I left the computer with the lid closed in sleep mode for over an hour. It's back to having to shut down with the power button to get it up and running again. _)^&^%$

UP Date 2

Okay, my HP Envy 17t seems to be returning from sleep and keeping the settings on the mouse pad after reboot.

I followed the instructions to download the old MEI driver version 9.5.24.1790 and changes to the Windows update Services. I’ve left the Windows Update Services setting on manual because when I ran the Windows 10 “show or hide updates” troubleshooter package it never found the MEI driver.

I did see some odd graphics anomalies on the home screen once when it came up from sleep but at least it came out of sleep. It’s the first day, I’ll post if something changes.

What is the Dutch name of the 'Administrative Tools'.

Can't find anything that looks like 'Windows Update' either.

Please no Google translate answers.

Yep, updating the graphics driver won't help...  It's an issue with the MEI driver.

Follow the steps outlined here:

This MEI fix didn't work for me either.  I have a HP Envy from 2012, previously running windows 7 64bit.  Still won't sleep.  Screen goes black with I push the power button, but the machine stays running.  Have to do hard shut down with power button.  I think I'm going to revert to Windows 7 again so I can have a computer I can use!

Are you sure you downgraded the MEI? Check in "programs and features" and see what version the Intel Management Engine is at.

You'll also want to check in Device Manager under System Devices.

Device Manager shows the driver version, while Programs and Features shows the software version.  If either one is v11, your system likely auto-"upgraded" you back to the faulty one.  If so, try following the steps I posted to use the Show or Hide Updates Troubleshooter to block automatic updates for this particular driver.

If you do show v9 or v10 under both Device Manager and Programs and Features, the issue may be caused by a diferent driver on your device.

Hi Dan, for resolving sleep/shutdown issues, I followed all of your directions up until installing the MEI driver. When I tried installing it, I got an error message saying, "This computer does not meet the minimum requirements for installing the software." I think that this might have to do with my not having an MEI Driver already installed on my computer, since you warned not to uninstall version 11 before installing version 9 or 10 as some version is needed beforehand. I tried installing version 11.0.0.1158 first but it wouldn't let me install that version either. I was wondering if you have a solution for this? Thank you! :generic:

EDIT

I used the Intel System Identifcation Utility and found out that my computer's processor is Intel® Pentium® Processor T4300. It seems to be a 64-bit processor which is strange since my OS is 32-bit.

EDIT2

Just realized that I was looking at the wrong thing. And apparently having a 64-bit processor and a 32-bit OS is normal. But my Display Adapter is Mobile Intel(R) 4 Series Express Chipset Family (Microsoft Corporation - WDDM 1.1), unlike what a lot of people seem to have who used your method and had it work for them. I don't know how to downgrade this display adapter or if I even have to. :indifferent: Do you have any idea? As my screen still won't wake after opening my lid from sleep. Thanks again!

EDIT3

I ran the Intel Manageability Engine Verification Utility and got this error message:

The Manageability Engine check has encountered an error. Below is the error that was encountered, along with a suggestion for correcting the error.

Explanation: Intel® ME is disabled or not available

Suggestion:
1. Verify Intel® ME is properly enabled in BIOS
2. If error persists, unplug power for 6 seconds. For mobile platforms, also remove the battery.
3. If error persists, clear CMOS and unplug power for 6 seconds. For mobile platforms, also remove the battery.
4. If error still persists, flash Intel® ME region and unplug power for 6 seconds. For mobile platforms, also remove the battery.

Error 9255: Fail to read FW Status Register value 0x0

Not fully understanding the suggestion.
