Hey everyone,

I may have found a more permanent solution.  First I downloaded the BETA driver directly from AMD. I included the link. Make sure its the one marked 10/12/2015 not 7/28/2015.

http://support.amd.com/en-us/download/mobile?os=Windows%2010%20-%2064

Second I let windows update and the screen went dim as usual. I restarted at this point, which took longer than usual. Then once restarted I ran the update from AMD. I will mention that it took a bit of time and my screen was black for several minutes but it was fine. Once it restarted it was all good. All brightness control was restored. And the gpu works as usual. I know every system is different but this worked for me.

Cheers

I have poorly described this problem in three other threads in HP forums. You are the right place to be, I have to dig further down and see what the solutions are.   Here is how I CLOSED OUT the other threads:

"No, AMD is explaining what is wrong, but I am having a rough time understanding the instructions.  I had to drop back to exactly the day when I said I was beginning to go bonkers-- problem started 10/21 so I restored to 10/20.  They say we have to do something so Windows 10 doesn't have the chance to update the display driver, so I need help.  I'm sorry, but the instructions on the YouTube video send you back to a Windows Display Adapter that is 9 years old, and cannot handle the appropriate resolution.

We have to prevent updates. I need instructions."

My McAfee is already telling me there are updates and I'm blocking them at the moment, I only got my brightness and good resolution 45 minutes ago, after 6 maddening days.

Now, here is the other thing:  On that exact day when F2 and F3 keys stopped functioning, the ability to get screen grabs vanished, too.

sorry, I do not know, while I was flipping out, what "monitor" was selected, but I'm back in with brightness and decent resolution, Generic PnP  IS enabled.   So, there's nothing to change.  This absolutely is going to get hosed again any time now, and I cannot risk it.

Thank you.

Nick, I put the Beta driver, dated 10/12, actually posted 10/15 at AMD also.  It was fine for a few minutes, but then I let it restart, and it went back to the old 2006 Microsoft Basic Display Adapter again, it was slow, and everything was too big to see the full screen.

Nick112blue,  I don't see how this can be the permanent fix, because AMD's own forum had instructions (I lost the bookmark  when I restored 2 hours ago) says you have to do something to present any more automatic updating in display adapters.  I'm going to go and put the Beta back on ONE MORE TIME, but I know I'm about to have another problem, and I'm scared to death.

Alright, I installed the BETA  again after a restore to last week, and it has gone dim AGAIN.  I am going to allow it to reboot, but expect me to be back and joining you in the  climb to the looney bin of the blogoshphere.  I cannot take this!

I guess the old adage - "misery loves company" - is appropriate at this point. Altogether FUBB! I can imagine there are many others unlike myself who cannot live without the advanced graphics features. For the moment, I am happy to safe rather than sorry with the generic PnP. I cannot believe that HP, Microsoft and AMD are happy to let this continue - a BIG BLACK EYE for all of them. Microsoft is protecting their new pricing schema with the automatic updates. HP is standing by twiddling their thumbs because we have all paid for our machine (with advanced graphics). And who knows about AMD? Trust me, never again any HP laptop and certainly never anything with AMD graphics. Nunca, nunca, nunca. Nada, nada, nada.

"misery loves company"   Leatherbytes, you really made me laugh!   I am so very glad you came back, I hope Nick does, too.  My first name is Julia, I'm nowhere near as experienced as HP says I am.

I refer you to a comment I made on a YouTube video that was also attempting to address all of this:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VWgMY1dzxM0    Please steer people HERE to the solution, not "Re: Screen Brightness" or  "Re: cannot change brightness on Pavilion dv7-6100 Entertainment shortly after Win 10 upgrade"    OR the YouTube video, which put me on a decent path, but is going to leave the user upset.
