I purchased a dv6-7214nr notebook with the Ralink RT3290 wifi card.  The laptop is connected to an Xfinity 2.4GHz gateway.  On various speedtests I am getting no more than 10Mbps down and 10Mbps up; whereas my iphone at the same distance from the router as the laptop gets 25.  I've tried the usual suspects to fix the problem:

-Updated Bios

-Latest drivers are installed

-Changed channels

-Toggled Bluetooth off

-Changed wifi power settings to max performance on battery and plug.

-I could not upgrade the firmware of the router as it is an xifinity router with no simple way to upgrade, besides my other wifi connected devices work fine.

Wifi status on network properties shows I am connected at 54Mbps; I'm just not seeing it in speedtests or any downloads that I have done. Once hard wired, everything works fine.

I'd hate to put time in to a system restore, so I am looking for some other suggestions.  Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Hi,

Have you got the lappy from Computer Upgrade King? I was thinking to get one with a Core i7-3920XM. The lappy costs even less than the CPU itself in the UK!!:)

That Ralink chip is not unfortunately the top product and many people complain about it. However, some guys have found out that an Intel 6235 chip 2x2 works with Dv6-7000 series Intel based laptops:

Could you let me know if that Intel chip really works, please? Cheers

Well, I've got same problems with my HP Pavillion G7 2205 SR. It's Ralink RT3290 wi-fi card. Drivers version 5.0.35.0.

I've got Windows 8.1 installed. My router is Asus RT-N12LX. It's set to N only mode. 20/40 mhz auto channels. So problem is usuall for this seems like. It can only establish 54mbit/s .In windows it's said 802.11g mode. So what should I do?

Hello Nerdel,

I understand that you are experiencing slower internet connections with your notebook. I have included the Windows 8 driver 'Ralink 802.11 b/g/n WiFi Adapter'. Please click the orange download button. Once the download has completed, right click on the software and run in compatibility mode.

If updating the driver this way does not resolve the issue. I have included the document 'Troubleshooting Wireless Network and Internet (Windows 😎'. Please follow through the steps in order for the best result.

Please let me know if you are able to browse faster, thank you.
