Hi! I've been told to bring my post to the enterprise forums as my notebook is an elitebook! So I'll just copy and paste my previous (unanswered) issue that's still ongoing!
I've requested for help for this before but didn't receive help that fixed my system, so I'm hoping that I could get something more substantial with the experts!
I'm using a HP elitebook 840 G1 and lately I've been having slow start-ups. Instead of taking a few seconds to boot up, it now takes around 20-40+ seconds to boot up. Occasionally, when the system boot ups, a white screen shows up. On this white screen, there are two lines.
"The bios has recovered its identity data from the Embedded Controller due to data mismatch."
Then there is a 10 second countdown before my computer successfully boots up. Also, I realised that after this started happening, my "sleep" and "hibernate" function no longer works. Whenever I put my computer to sleep/hibernate (with open web browsers and folders, etc.), when I switch it back on, the computer seems to boot up as if I had shut it down. When it completely boot ups, I'm just greeted with my desktop. I wanted to email this to support, but (another problem) my serial number isn't recognized by HP for some reason.
I don't think that there are any installations that I have made that could have led to this? But I'm not all that certain when the problem actually started, therefore I can't give you a list of what I recently installed.
I'm using windows 8.1.
My elitebook 840 G1 uses an intel i7-4600U processor with intel graphics + Radeon HD 8750M, 1TB hard disk and 8GB of ram. All assistance would be appreciated!

I'd try to manually download the latest BIOS update:
http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp65501-66000/sp65524.exe
If you can successfully apply the BIOS update, it may resolve the issue.
If you can't successfully apply the BIOS update, it's possible it's a hardware issue and you should seek service. (An Elitebook 840 G1 should be less than 3 years old and you should have warranty support available.)
If the BIOS update applies successfully and doesn't resolve the issue, it may be a software issue related to various drivers. You may want to backup your data files and use the restoration software that came with your system to restore the machine back to factory defaults. If this doesn't fix the problem, then I'd say it's a hardware problem and advise you to call HP for warranty service.

Same problem here. I landed here after reading /t5/Notebook-HP-ProBook-EliteBook/Numerous-issues-with-Elitebook-840-G1-models/td-p/6481222#.U_HB5vm... . My hunch is that the BIOS issue "grey screen of death" started after HP support assistant performed a BIOS update. Video also stopped working properly at the same time (lost multiple screen support - cant detect external monitor via displayport).
Apart from the BIOS issue that started just recently, I have (as other users) also had issues with resuming after standby/hibernation as well as dual monitor support.
I will disable HP Support assistant auto checking and resort to manually install updates from the hp site when needed (Ill let you know if that resolves the BIOS error). Below are my current specs that gives me the BIOS error every now and then.
Windows 8.1Pro 64-bit
Video (two units listed in device manager):
- "AMD Radeon HD8750M", driver version: 13.152.1.9002
- "Intel(R) HD Graphics Family", driver version: 10.18.10.3496
BIOS: Dont know, will reboot and try to find version in BIOS settings and possibly post the again here.

A little update: This morning, got the white/grey BIOS screen again, so chipset drivers didnt do anything (apart from maybe solve dual monitor problem). I took the time to document exactly what happens when the white screen appears. First I get a white screen saying:
BIOS Identity Manual Recovery
Embedded controller has identified a problem with platform configuration data and recovery policy is Manual.
Contact your platform administrator to continue with manual recovery, or change recovery policy to Auto in F10 BIOS Setup.
**************************
Here, I have to reboot (nothing else to do), on the next boot I get the error message"
The bios has recovered its identity data from the Embedded Controller due to hash mismatch"
10...9...8...7... countdown
blue accept button.
**************************
Computer appears to be working normally, probably cant resume after hibernation and some issues with video after waking up after standby but I can live with that.

I have just started getting the "Embedded controller has identified a problem with platform configuration data and Recover Policy is Manual."
This is on an EliteBook 850G1 though. This laptop had sleep resuming issues, where it appeared to do a restart rather than a resume (all previously open applications closed on rusume).
I have applied the lated BIOS update and chipset drivers to try to fix the resuming issues, but now getting the embedded controller issue.

Your problem will most likely go away if you update your BIOS and two graphics cards (Intel + AMD).
BIOS: Just follow the driver instructions. No preparation needed.
GRAPHICS: Remember to uninstall both current graphics drivers (first AMD then Intel) before you update. Make sure you first remove them through: "Control Panel -> Programs and Features -> Uninstall", and then also through: Device Manager. After uninstalling, first install the Intel driver and then the AMD driver. You need to restart your computer in between each uninstall and reinstall.
FYI: you will not be able to boot your laptop while docked with this configuration (even though it is the recommended [last] driver configuration from HP). HP is looking into the issue as we speak.
BIOS Update: 01.20 REV. A
Intel Video Driver: 3621 REV. W
