Hello,

I have a brand new Spectre x360 (i7 edition). I turned on the start-up password in the BIOS and now (like your other laptop models, it appears) a very loud beep is heard upon startup. I require the BIOS password for security reasons.

I am currently running the BIOS that was released with the machine (F.04) and there are presently no updates to the BIOS on your support page.

I am asking if you can please provide a BIOS release that allows the option to turn off the loud beep (or one that eliminates it entirely). I would hate to have to return this laptop over such an easily avoidable problem.

Thanks.

The following BIOS update should let you turnoff the password beep:

File name: sp71197.exe

Release details

Released: Apr 21, 2015

Version F.12 Rev.A

Fix and enhancements

- Fixes an intermittent issue which causes the system to shutdown unexpectedly.
- Fixes an intermittent issue where the system displays a fan fault alert message in error when the fan is functioning properly.- Provides an improved help message for the Trusted Platform Module (TPM) state in the F10 BIOS setup option.
-Provides the ability to enable or disable the audible password prompt (beep) for the BIOS administrator login or Power-On Password. The audible prompt is disabled when the Power On Self-Test (POST) Hotkey Delay setting is set to 0.

(Please ensure that this is the correct BIOS update softpaq for your particular model, but note the last fix listed.)

I did promise to update you when I was sure that there was a solution. I hope this works well for you!

I'm surprised that this problem is so difficult that no one from HP has bothered to respond.  Is it really that difficult to offer a BIOS that doesn't make an unnecessary, loud beep every time you start up the computer? Is there a process for me to formally request this from the company, rather than this discussion board?

Agreed - this is an extremely annoying problem!! I hope they can come up with a solution. Otherwise great laptop though.

As a previous x360 buyer as well, my only solutionw was to turn off the BIOS security at boot-up. But if you need a more fully secure device, that is not a good option. Will watch this thread and hope something gets figured out.

Appreciate the suggestion, but correct - I cannot simply turn off the added security.  Again, I can't believe something this simple is so difficult.  In searching the forums, it looks like past HP computers have had this problem, and then have been fixed with a BIOS update.  Why not incorporate the solution into the initial release?

Thanks.

Is anybody from HP monitoring this? Is there any way to get a response from HP on this matter?

HP Recommended

I'm still surprised by the lack of response from anyone HP. Is this how HP treats its customers? By ignoring them? This is a legitimate issue that would prevent me from purchasing a future laptop, and / or result in me returning my current laptop. How can this get addressed?

I'll look into this. Don't have an answer, but will update you when I do.
